Le guerre si fanno finire anche così: smettendo di vendere armi a chi le fa. Fino a pochi anni fa sarebbe stato impensabile, perché i rapporti tra i nostri governi e il regime saudita erano troppo forti. Ma anche per i nostri politici sta diventando sempre più difficile ignorare la totale mancanza di rispetto per i diritti umani da parte del regime. L’Europa è a un passo dal votare un embargo, devono solo capire che tutto il mondo li sta guardando.
Una bomba saudita ha ucciso oltre 200 invitati a un matrimonio. Sparano dagli elicotteri sui civili in fuga. È difficile togliersi dalla testa certe immagini, ma è proprio così che le “nostre” armi vengono usate. Lo Yemen si trova in mezzo a una guerra a distanza tra Arabia e Iran, entrambi colpevoli di violenze terrificanti. Questo voto europeo da solo non farà finire la guerra, ma può mandare un messaggio chiaro: non venderemo più armi a un regime che bombarda indiscriminatamente la popolazione civile. E dopo una vittoria così in Europa, potremo passare anche agli altri governi. Il regime saudita non è l’unico a sfruttare questi traffici: i grandi produttori di armi europei stanno guadagnando miliardi grazie al massacro in Yemen! L'Italia è uno dei più grossi esportatori di armi al mondo e l'Arabia è uno dei nostri maggiori clienti. Se non agiamo subito, l'influenza delle grandi aziende sui politici rischia di far continuare questo orrore ancora a lungo.

Gli occhi della Madonna di Guadalupe costituiscono un grande enigma per la scienza, come hanno rilevato gli studi dell'ingegner José Aste Tönsmann del Centro di Studi Guadalupani di Città del Messico.
La storia
Alfonso Marcué, fotografo ufficiale dell'antica Basilica di Guadalupe di Città del Messico, ha scoperto nel 1929 quella che sembrava l'immagine di un uomo barbuto riflessa nell'occhio destro della Madonna. Nel 1951 il disegnatore José Carlos Salinas Chávez ha scoperto la stessa immagine mentre osservava con una lente d'ingrandimento una fotografia della Madonna di Guadalupe. L'ha vista riflessa anche nell'occhio sinistro, nello stesso posto in cui si sarebbe proiettato un occhio vivo.
Parere medico e il segreto dei suoi occhi
Nel 1956 il medico messicano Javier Torroella Bueno ha redatto il primo rapporto medico sugli occhi della cosiddetta Virgen Morena. Il risultato: come in qualsiasi occhio vivo si compivano le leggi Purkinje-Samson, ovvero c'è un triplice riflesso degli oggetti localizzati davanti agli occhi della Madonna e le immagini si distorcono per la forma curva delle sue cornee.
Nello stesso anno, l'oftalmologo Rafael Torija Lavoignet ha esaminato gli occhi della Santa Immagine e ha confermato l'esistenza nei due occhi della Vergine della figura descritta dal disegnatore Salinas Chávez.
Inizia lo studio con processi di digitalizzazione
Dal 1979, il dottore in sistemi computazionali e laureato in Ingegneria Civile José Aste Tönsmann ha scoperto il mistero racchiuso dagli occhi della Guadalupana. Mediante il processo di digitalizzazione di immagini per computer, ha descritto il riflesso di 13 personaggi negli occhi della Virgen Morena, in base alle leggi di Purkinje-Samson.
Il piccolissimo diametro delle cornee (di 7 e 8 millimetri) fa escludere la possibilità di disegnare le figure negli occhi, se si tiene conto del materiale grezzo sul quale è immortalata l'immagine.

Cattolici e ortodossi: l’ABC delle differenze e dei punti in comune. Perché l'incontro tra Papa Francesco e il Patriarca Kirill è storico? Risponde Manuel Nin, nuovo Esarca Apostolico di Grecia per i fedeli di rito bizantino Per la prima volta nella Storia si incontreranno un Papa della Chiesa cattolica e un Patriarca della Chiesa ortodossa russa. Dopo un’antichissima divisone, Papa Francesco e il patriarca di Mosca Cirillo si incontreranno venerdì 12 febbraio a Cuba, durante la visita che il Pontefice farà prima di andare in Messico.
Per analizzare le prime conseguenze di questo evento, Aleteia ha intervistato padre Manuel Nin, benedettino spagnolo cattolico di rito orientale.
“I risultati si vedranno nei prossimi mesi, o forse anni. Ma più che ‘profetizzare’ ciò che potrebbe accadere, è preferibile rimanere nella straordinarietà di questo presente, che mette enfasi sull’importanza di un incontro fraterno“, ha detto.
Il luogo – Entrambi i leader si troveranno in un viaggio in America Latina, non è un incontro improvvisato. E accadrà fuori dell’Europa, epicentro dello scisma del 1054. Lontano dalle sedi ufficiali delle due chiese: Città del Vaticano e Mosca.
“Si è cercata una coincidenza cronologica dei due viaggi in America Latina. Poi si è trovato il punto di incontro, soprattutto per quanto riguarda il ‘campo neutro’ in cui i due possono incontrarsi e parlare”, ha detto padre Nin, che Francesco ha recentemente nominato Esarca Apostolico di Grecia per i fedeli di rito bizantino.
All’aeroporto internazionale José Martí dell’Avana è stata firmata una dichiarazione congiunta tra i primati delle due Chiese cristiane che non sono ancora in piena comunione, aprendo a un possibile nuovo cammino di riconciliazione.
La Chiesa ortodossa russa ha – per numero di fedeli – una notevole influenza nel cristianesimo orientale, contando quasi 165 milioni dei 250 milioni di cristiani ortodossi in tutto il mondo.
Che cosa c’è in gioco? “Vorrei sottolineare l’unità, che è in effetti ciò a cui dovrebbero tendere tutti i cristiani”, ha detto il sacerdote, dal 1999 rettore del Pontificio Collegio Greco di Roma.
Dal punto di vista della fede questo incontro è importante anche per chi è credente (mediante il battesimo): “La cosa importante è che i cristiani – che per mille anni hanno avuto queste divisioni, queste incomprensioni, o a volte ignoranza reciproca – cerchino di ricostruire la piena comunione tramite il Vangelo, tramite la parola di Gesù; è evidente che quando Gesù prega il Padre nel Vangelo di Giovanni, lo fa affinché tutti siano uno”, ha detto.
Sia il sogno di Giovanni Paolo II che gli sforzi silenziosi di Benedetto XVI (che aveva anche conosciuto Kirill, prima che fosse patriarca) sono segmenti della strada che porta alla conquista ecumenica che Papa Bergoglio è riuscito a custodire.
“È un incontro più che positivo, che per molteplici ragioni non era stato possibile realizzare nei decenni precedenti”, ha osservato Nin.
Ma perché è stato più complicato l’incontro con Kirill – Patriarca di Mosca e di tutta la Russia – che con il Patriarca di Costantinopoli, Bartolomeo I?
“Ogni Chiesa ortodossa è una chiesa autocefala, quindi, indipendente. E la via del dialogo, dell’incontro e della relazione con le altre Chiese cristiane ha un suo ritmo”, ha detto il professore di teologie orientali in diverse università pontificie e istituti romani.
È evidente che l’incontro fraterno tra il Papa e il Patriarca di Costantinopoli è stato più veloce rispetto a quello con la Chiesa di Mosca.
Sul volo verso Roma, di ritorno da Ankara, Francesco aveva dichiarato che, a causa della guerra in Ucraina, “il povero (Kirill) ha molti problemi e l’incontro con il Papa è passato in secondo piano. Ma entrambi vogliamo incontrarci e andiamo verso questo obiettivo”.
Nella sua analisi, Nin conferma che si tratta di un “incontro storico in quanto tra due chiese che non sono in piena comunione. Non ci sono stati altri momenti di incontro tra il Papa e il Patriarca di Mosca”.
Quindi, si tratta di una nuova fase nelle relazioni tra cattolici e ortodossi, che inizia a prendere forma dopo anni di conversazioni riservate.
L’esperto ha infatti confermato che nel corso degli ultimi anni vi sono stati incontri personali tra alcuni cardinali e dei metropoliti russi.
“Ma questo evento presente è importante perché sono i due capi delle chiese ad incontrarsi. Questo di per sé è molto positivo, e certamente porterà ad una più profonda comprensione di ciascuna delle due Chiese e alla fratellanza nelle comunità cristiane, che è la cosa più importante”, ha osservato.
Nin mette enfasi sugli aspetti più positivi dell’incontro – nonostante le differenze teologiche, a partire dalle discussioni a causa del “primato del Successore di Pietro“.

Vienna (AsiaNews) - In un Medio oriente e un Iraq "ferito", il "silenzio" degli Stati arabi e dei leader musulmani favoriscono l'ascesa dello Stato islamico, una forza "barbara" e brutale che "distorce" la religione musulmana. È quanto ha affermato il patriarca caldeo Mar Louis Raphael I Sako, intervenendo a una conferenza internazionale a Vienna sul dialogo interreligioso. Sua beatitudine avverte che "gli esperti e i dotti di religione musulmana devono contrastare le ragioni dello SI, confutare le loro argomentazioni con la giurisprudenza e denunciare le loro pratiche criminali", perché "le loro idee e i loro pensieri sono una piaga per la razza umana".
Il patriarca Sako ha letto questa lettera ieri a Vienna, in Austria, in occasione di una Conferenza internazionale organizzata dal centro attivo nella promozione del dialogo interreligioso, ispitato e sostenuto dal re saudita Abdullah bin Abdulaziz. L'incontro si è tenuto dal 18 al 19 novembre e ha registrato la partecipazione di 200 personalità musulmane e cristiane, all'insegna del tema: "Uniti contro la violenza in nome della religione, a sostegno delle differenze culturali e religiose in Iraq e Siria".
Il patriarca ha anche denunciato la tratta delle donne da parte delle milizie jihadiste, che hanno operato un ribaltamento dei valori riportando il mondo ad un'epoca oscurantista. "Attendiamo con ansia - conclude il patriarca - il giorno in cui i musulmani urleranno con forza [...] che gli attacchi contro persone innocenti, siano essi cristiani o musulmani, credenti o meno, sono contro la religione e contro Dio".

Ai fratelli e alle sorelle musulmane di tutto il mondo,
mi rivolgo a voi salutandovi come fratelli, all'interno della stessa famiglia umana e in nome di tutti quei valori comuni che condividiamo. Basandoci sui nostri obiettivi comuni e fiduciosi nella capacità delle nazioni di preservare la vita e di orientare l'opinione pubblica al rispetto delle aspirazioni, mi appello a voi, che rappresentate la maggioranza moderata dei musulmani ovunque vi troviate, per capire se la nostra attuale tragedia sia solo una causa persa, oppure vi siano responsabilità non ancora accertate.
Mi rivolgo a voi con uno spirito di sincerità, portando nelle mie mani la mappa di un Medio oriente e di un Iraq feriti; proprio quella parte del mondo, che per molti secoli ha rappresentato il centro del mondo; un'area in cui è in atto una crisi storica senza precedenti. Con questa lettera vorrei esprimere tutto il mio dolore e il dolore dei vostri fratelli e sorelle cristiani, di fronte a questa terribile calamità, richiamandomi alla vostra coscienza e alla vostra buona volontà, perché facciate qualcosa per la liberazione delle città, il recupero delle proprietà e la restituzione dei loro diritti. Di conseguenza, sono a chiedervi un cambiamento drastico, perché è vostro dovere trovare una risposta, la quale deve venire da voi e non da altre forze esterne.
Condividendo la stessa sensibilità umana, credo che anche voi - come noi - siate rimasti ugualmente scioccati dalle gesta barbare che hanno imperversato nelle città di Mosul e della piana di Ninive ai danni dei cristiani, yazidi e altre minoranze, sradicati e cacciati a mani vuote dalle loro case e villaggi in piena notte, spinti verso "un futuro incerto" in preda alla paura e al terrore.
All'interno di questa assemblea, riunita a nome dell'umanità, vale la pena ricordare che vi è una legge superiore (sharia) di amore e misericordia incisa nel cuore di ogni uomo. Questa legge superiore chiede compassione e carità, per ogni genitore privo di speranza per il proprio figlio che muore di fame fra le sue braccia e misericordia per chiunque sia oggetto di sofferenze. Per questo i crimini commessi dallo Stato islamico (SI) contro questi civili inermi rivelano un'assurda teoria o legge che nulla ha a che vedere con alcuna legge umana, quanto piuttosto con la barbarie.
Quello che più desta impressione è la violazione da parte dello SI della sacralità delle chiese e dei monasteri, dando fuoco a quello che è racchiuso all'interno fra cui vecchi manoscritti, vendendole o trasformandole in moschee, alcune delle quali fra l'altro sono state costruite nei primi secoli. Ed è al contempo fonte di vergogna assistere alla riduzione legalizzata delle donne in condizioni di prigionia; esse sono vendute al mercato degli schiavi, diventando così "merce di scambio" alla stregua di un "vecchio arnese"! Questo è, di tutti, il male peggiore! Mi fa ricordare i mostri, che vengono descritti nel libro dell'Apocalisse (capitolo 13).
Difatti, questi gesti barbari che resteranno per sempre una macchia nella storia dell'umanità, sono promossi e perpetrati da organizzazioni e ideologie del tutto simili al Nazismo e alle altre filosofie politiche totalitarie. Tuttavia, la storia umana non mostrerà mai compassione verso quanti pianificano e mettono in atto piani di natura così feroce, che minacciano persino l'esistenza stessa dei cristiani, che sono originari di queste terre. A differenza dei Nazisti e delle altre ideologie mortali del XXmo secolo, lo SI rivendica ogni suo gesto in nome dell'islam.
Ancor più, sono fonte di inquietudine quelli che hanno negato o sminuito la minaccia rappresentata dallo SI, in particolare quando la nostra gente priva di speranza - i cristiani, gli yazidi, i membri delle altre minoranze - sono stati colpiti in nome della religione islamica. Ed è al contempo fonte di costernazione la risposta del tutto deficitaria della comunità islamica ufficiale, che ha denunciato questi atti solo attraverso dichiarazioni timide e senza alcuna forza, mostrando al tempo stesso la mancanza di una vera guida nell'informare l'opinione pubblica sul pericolo rappresentato dallo Stato islamico, il quale perpetra e legittima i suoi gesti e i suoi atti con il manto della religione.

Come è possibile restare inerti davanti a questi crimini senza fine, davanti alla repressione e alla cacciata di persone innocenti, secondo comportamenti che per lo SI e i movimenti fondamentalisti sono assolutamente legittimi e legali. Non è forse questa una umiliazione per tutta l'umanità in generale e per le donne, in particolare? Abbiamo forse iniziato a vivere in un'era in cui si registra un ribaltamento dei valori? All'apparenza non vi è alcun rispetto per gli esseri umani, e la vita sembra aver perso ogni valore.
Noi, in qualità di minoranze senza protezione o cura, siamo oggetto di attacchi, i nostri bambini sono minacciati e rapiti, le nostre case depredate o saccheggiate in pieno giorno, come se tutto questo fosse lecito (Halal) e normale. Abbiamo raggiunto la vetta dell'ingiustizia: le nostre famiglie, che un tempo vivevano nelle loro case con dignità e orgoglio, oggi sono sfollate e sparse in molte città e villaggi, in tende o camper, oppure in stanze provvisorie, che sono fornite a titolo gratuito dalla Chiesa. Le malattie sono in continuo aumento, e fra i profughi cresce con sempre maggior forza un sentimento di ansia e inquietudine.
Colmi di compassione, vi chiediamo di agire in modo responsabile e di fare la vostra parte se lo Stato mostra poco, se non alcuno, interesse a liberare Mosul e le altre città della piana di Ninive, di modo che migliaia di sfollati possano fare rientro nelle loro abitazioni. È essenziale sottolineare il ruolo fondamentale ricoperto da alcune forze regionali o internazionali, che cercano di garantire la sopravvivenza delle cellule dello SI interferendo in un modo ben calcolato. Siamo preoccupati non solo per la mancanza di speranza circa un ritorno immediato nelle nostre città, cosa che spinge sempre più persone a emigrare all'estero, in una qualsiasi nazione che sappia garantire loro maggiore sicurezza, ma anche perché potremmo restare solo un frammento nella storia, implorando protezione all'Unesco perché la conservi.
In preda all'inquietudine, vi chiediamo di pensare in modo responsabile alla nostra tragedia e di fare qualcosa per migliorare la sicurezza e garantire stabilità ai cittadini. Lo sviluppo del nostro Paese potrà essere garantito solo restituendo ai suoi abitanti una vita normale. Le vere fondamenta di una vostra responsabilità comune nei nostri confronti si basano sulla vostra consapevolezza di un crescente estremismo religioso e oscurantista di natura takfirista; esso è fonte di minaccia per noi, ma non è certo meno pericoloso per voi.
Non dimenticate che i cristiani sono nativi di questa terra, e hanno contribuito a lungo allo sviluppo della cultura araba. Gli arabi devono assumere una posizione comune, con un voto univoco contro l'estremismo. E questa coalizione araba unita deve assicurare una soluzione pacifica. L'estremismo è dappertutto e ciò che serve è moderazione e un processo di revisione del pensiero che metta al bando l'oscurantismo, unito alla condanna del terrorismo in nome della religione che va combattuto in ogni sua forma.
Gli esperti e i dotti di religione musulmana devono contrastare le ragioni dello SI, confutare le loro argomentazioni con la giurisprudenza e denunciare le loro pratiche criminali, affermare che le loro idee e i loro pensieri sono una piaga per la razza umana. Le istituzioni educative e religiose devono promuovere e infondere negli studenti una cultura moderata, che insegni il rispetto della diversità e dia una immagine obiettiva dei vari popoli, che sia connotata dal rispetto e dal valore dell'uguaglianza fra tutti gli esseri umani, perché chiunque deve poter vivere in modo libero e degno.
Il vostro silenzio non è di alcuna utilità perché lo SI e i suoi seguaci sferreranno altri attacchi in grado di distorcere sempre più l'islam. Ed è pericoloso concedere loro questa possibilità, perché le persone penseranno che l'islam è una minaccia alla pace mondiale. Nutriamo grande fiducia sul fatto che possiate agire prima che sia troppo tardi, per impedire che questo tsunami possa investire una nuova zona. The liberation of Mosul and the Nineveh Plain is a priority for the return of displaced people, Christian and non-Christians, forced to live in appalling conditions. The silence of Muslim leaders is fueling jihadist violence, we need a clear condemnation. Vienna (AsiaNews) - In a "wounded" Middle East and Iraq the "silence" of the Arab and Muslim leaders is encouraging the rise of the Islamic State, a "barbaric" and brutal force that "distorts" the Muslim religion. This was stated by the Chaldean Patriarch Mar Louis Raphael I Sako speaking at an international conference in Vienna on interreligious dialogue. His Beatitude warns that "experts and scholars of Islam must tackle the root cause of IS, refute their arguments with case law and expose their criminal practices" because "their ideas and thoughts are a plague on the human race".
Patriarch Sako delivered his intervention yesterday in Vienna, Austria, on the occasion of an international conference organized by the center for the promotion of interreligious dialogue, founded and supported by Saudi King Abdullah bin Abdulaziz. The meeting was held November 18 to 19 and involved the participation of 200 Muslim and Christian figures, under the theme: "United against violence in the name of religion, in support of cultural and religious differences in Iraq and Syria".
The Patriarch also denounced the trafficking of women by the jihadi militias, who are trying to regress society back to the dark ages. To the Muslim Brothers and Sisters in All Over the World.
Greetings to you as brothers in the same human family and in name of all values we share. Based on our common goals and with confidence in the capability of nations to preserve life and to direct the public opinion to respect their aspirations, I appeal to you, who represent the moderate majority of Muslims wherever you are, our current tragedy be a lost cause or an unacknowledged responsibility. I address you with a spirit of sincerity, carrying in my hand a map of our wounded Middle East and of Iraq, that part of the globe, which has been for many centuries the central focus of the world; a zone which is facing an unprecedented historic crisis. With this letter I would like to express my pain and the pain of your Christian brothers and sisters in the face of our calamity, appealing to your conscience and goodwill to do something for the liberation of their towns, recovery of their property and restitution of their rights. Accordingly, I request a drastic change, because it is your responsibility to find an answer, which has to come from you and not from an outside force.
Sharing the same human sensitivity, I believe, you were equally shocked as we were by the barbaric acts that swept through the towns of Mosul and the Nineveh Plain against the Christians, Yazidis and other minorities who were uprooted empty-handed from their homes and villages overnight, heading towards "an unknown future" struck by fear and terror.
Amidst this gathering in the name of humanity, it is worth mentioning that there is a superior law (Sharia) of love and mercy engraved in the human heart. This superior law demands compassion and charity for every helpless father with a hungry infant in his arms and mercy for every human fellow in pain. Therefore, the crimes committed by ISIS (The Islamic State of Iraq and Syria) against such helpless civilians demonstrate an absurd theory or law that is by no means based on any human law except on a barbaric one.
What was equally shocking is the violation by the ISIS of the sanctity of churches and monasteries by burning of their contents including old manuscripts, selling or converting them into mosques, some of these were built in the first centuries. It is also quite shameful to see the captivity of women becoming a legal legislation, as they are sold in the slave markets at a 'bargain price' as if they were "junk"! That is evil in the worst respect. This reminds me of the monster, which was mentioned in the book of Revelation (chapter 13). In fact, these barbarous acts which will always be a blot in the human history are promoted by organizations and ideologies parallel to the Nazis and other totalitarian political philosophies. The human history, however, will never have mercy on those who planned and implemented such vicious acts, which threaten the existence of Christians, the natives of these lands. Unlike the Nazis and other deadly ideologies of the twentieth century, ISIS claims doing all this in the name of Islam. I feel more shocked because of those who disbelieved and belittled the serious danger that ISIS represents, especially when our helpless people, Christians, Yazidis, and other minorities were targeted in the name of the Islamic religion. It is quite shocking the insufficiency of the official Islamic community that only denounced these acts by shy and helpless statements, showing the absence of a real role in raising the awareness of the public about the impending danger of ISIS in the name of religion.
How can one stand inactive in the face of these countless crimes, repression, and displacement of innocent people which are considered legal and legitimate by ISIS and hard-liners! Isn't this a humiliation for all mankind in general and women in particular? Have we started to live in an era of turning our backs on values? There is no apparent respect for human beings, nor does it appear that is life worth anything.
We, as minorities without protection or care, are targeted, our children are threatened and kidnapped, our homes were robbed or looted publicly as if it is legitimate (Halal). We have reached the peak of iniquity: our families were living in their own homes with dignity and pride, today they live homeless in several towns and villages, in tents or in caravans or in a room which is provided rent-free from the church. Disease is rampant, and the displaced are living in terrible anxiety.
Compassionately, we appeal to you to act responsibly on your part when little interest, if any, is expressed by the State to liberate Mosul and the towns of the Nineveh Plain, so that thousands of displaced people can return to their homes. And it is vital to point out the important role which to be taken to expose the regional and international forces that try to guarantee the survival of ISIS cells by interfering in a well calculated way.
We are concerned not only about the lack of hope for an immediate return to our towns which motivates people to migrate to any country that provides safety for them, but also that we might only be a piece of memory in history, beseeching UNESCO to preserve it.
In the midst of this anxiety, we request you to think responsibly of our tragedy and do something to improve the security and provide stability for the citizens. The development of our country would be assured only by ensuring a continuous normal life.
The real foundation of your common responsibility towards us is based on your awareness of the growing religious extremism and obscurantist takfirist that poses a threat to us and is no less dangerous for you.
Do not forget that Christians are natives in this land, and they have contributed a lot to Arab culture. Arabs must present a unified position with one vote against extremism. This united Arab coalition must ensure a peaceful solution. Extremism is everywhere and what is required is the adoption of moderation and a thinking process excommunicating obscurantism, in addition to the rejection of terrorism in the name of religion and resisting it in all its forms.
Religious scholars should rebuff ISIS arguments, refute their arguments with jurisprudence and denounce their heinous practices, in addition to proclaiming their thoughts as the scourge of humanity. Religious and educational institutions should start inculcating an open and moderate culture that respects diversity and provides an objective image about the different peoples, which is characterized by respect and belief in the equality of all to live in freedom and dignity.
Silence doesn't befit you because ISIS and their followers will direct more distortionary strikes on Islam. It's dangerous to give them that chance because people will think that Islam is a threat to world peace. We have great confidence that you will make a move before it's too late to prevent this tsunami from again hitting a new area.
We look forward to the day when Muslims announce officially to themselves and to those who are persecuted that attacking innocent peoples Muslims or Christians, believers or not is against religion and against God the Almighty who is the only one who will judge every human beings and recompense them with justice.

Quasi mille persone sono state uccise nell'est dell'Ucraina dall'inizio del cessate il fuoco, lo scorso 6 settembre, ed il totale delle vittime dallo scoppio del conflitto a metà aprile è salito ad "almeno 4.317", cui si sommano 9.921 feriti. Lo afferma l'Ufficio dell'Alto commissario Onu per i diritti umani. Violazioni sono state segnalate in questi mesi sia a carico delle forze di Kiev e delle milizie nazionaliste ucraine che le sostengono, sia a carico dei ribelli filorussi. L'ufficio dell'Alto Commissario delle Nazioni Unite per i Diritti Umani pubblicherà oggi il 7° rapporto della missione di monitoraggio sulla situazione dei diritti umani in Ucraina nel periodo dal 17 settembre al 31 ottobre.
Il rapporto toccherà temi come le fosse comuni scoperte alla fine di settembre nei pressi di Donetsk, così come i bombardamenti nelle regioni di Donetsk e Lugansk dell'Ucraina orientale tramite i lanciarazzi multipli ai primi di ottobre, come riportato dall'organizzazione indipendente Human Rights Watch.
La missione dell'Alto Commissario delle Nazioni Unite per i Diritti Umani in Ucraina è stata creata lo scorso marzo e disponde di 34 ispettori, presenti a Kiev, Leopoli, Odessa, Donetsk e Kharkov.
L'Aviazione Civile dell'Ucraina ha sanzionato con delle multe le compagnie aeree russe per i voli in Crimea.
Secondo Kiev, avrebbero violato lo spazio aereo nazionale. Le ammende ammontano a circa 17 milioni di dollari. I nomi delle compagnie multate sono pubblicati sul sito web del dipartimento: si tratta di 18 vettori, tra cui Aeroflot e VIM-Avia.
Non è il primo caso però: lo scorso agosto l'Ucraina aveva chiesto dei soldi alle aerolinee, ma l'Aviazione Civile russa si era rifiutata di pagare le multe, sostenendo che gli aerei avevano sorvolato la Crimea, ovvero lo spazio aereo russo.

A Washington hanno dichiarato che il ministro degli Esteri russo Sergej Lavrov ha frainteso le parole di John Kerry sulla dichiarazioni di Barack Obama riguardanti la posizione su Mosca.
Il segretario di Stato non ha espresso disaccordo con le affermazioni del presidente degli Stati Uniti secondo cui la Russia sarebbe una minaccia, ha dichiarato il portavoce del Dipartimento di Stato Jeff Rathke.
Gli era stata fatta una domanda sulle dichiarazione di Lavrov, secondo cui Kerry gli avrebbe chiesto di "ignorare" le dichiarazioni di Obama sull'inclusione della Russia nella lista delle minacce insieme ad Ebola e ISIS. I giornalisti avevano chiesto se il capo della diplomazia americana fosse d'accordo con l'opinione di Obama sulla Russia e la risposta era stata affermativa.

Durante il conflitto nel Donbass hanno perso la vita più di 4mila persone, mentre 10mila sono rimaste ferite e centinaia di migliaia sono state costrette a lasciare la regione, ha dichiarato l'inviata speciale dell'OSCE per l'Ucraina Heidi Tagliavini.
Intervenendo alla sessione del Consiglio permanente dell'OSCE, ha descritto il conflitto come "pericoloso e allarmante", sottolineando come la crisi possa "peggiorare."
"La situazione nella regione non è migliorata. Sono in corso scontri in diverse zone nella parte orientale dell'Ucraina, soprattutto nei pressi dell'aeroporto di Donetsk, così come alla periferia di Mariupol. Nessuno può dire cosa ci riservi il futuro e se ci sarà nuova speranza per la pace," - ha sottolineato Heidi Tagliavini.

Ogni 20 novembre si festeggia la Giornata internazionale per i diritti dell'infanzia. Nel Donbass la guerra continua, e a causa dei bombardamenti perdono la vita anche i bambini, recentemente a Gorlovka ne sono rimasti uccisi altri due. Stando al silenzio della stampa occidentale di fronte alla drammatica situazione nel Donbass, pare che i bambini dell'Ucraina orientale siano meno importanti degli altri, cioè bambini di serie B.
Nella giornata dell'infanzia "La Voce della Russia" si è rivolta a Ennio Bordato, presidente dell'Associazione "Aiutateci a salvare i bambini", che ha lanciato un'iniziativa a sostegno dei bambini vittime della guerra ucraina.
- Ci parli della raccolta fondi per i bambini del Donbass lanciata dalla vostra associazione.
-"Aiutateci a salvare i bambini" sin dai primi mesi di quest'anno dopo le tragiche conseguenze del colpo di Stato anticostituzionale a Kiev, si è mossa nel portare la solidarietà italiana ai bambini vittime della guerra. Noi abbiamo già raccolto oltre sette mila euro, di questi oltre sei mila sono già stati mandati ad un'associazione nostra partner nella regione di Rostov. Quest'associazione opera sia a Rostov con i rifugiati sia nel Donbass. Questa donazione andrà a beneficio di due orfanotrofi e di un reparto di neonatologia in una cittadina nella regione di Donetsk.
Stiamo comunque continuando la raccolta, in questi giorni abbiamo accumulato oltre mille euro e aspettiamo di avere una somma consistente da inviare in favore dei bambini di quelle zone, vittime della guerra e che soffriranno il Natale e il primo capodanno in una situazione drammatica.
- Nella guerra ucraina sono morti tanti bambini, parliamo di decine di vittime, però sulla stampa italiana non se ne parla. Possiamo quindi dire che i bambini dell'Ucraina orientale sono ritenuti di serie B dalla stampa e il governo italiano?
- Per la stampa italiana e i governi occidentali non solo sono dei bambini di serie B, ma in realtà sono persone che non esistono. L'ordine di Washington è di non parlarne. Quando se ne parla, è solo nella maniera voluta dal padrone d'oltreoceano. Noi soffriamo un territorio disastrato dalle bombe, un'economia colpita a morte dalla guerra di Kiev e il fatto che queste persone non esistono. Nel mondo del mainstream se tu non appari vuol dire che non esisti. La scelta politica a differenza di altre guerre, come quella della Jugoslavia, è stata diversa da parte di chi governa l'informazione. Non parlandone il problema non esiste.
- In Italia, come in Europa, si parla molto in questi tempi dei diritti d'espressione, dei lavoratori e delle coppie omossessuali. Quali sono i diritti che dovrebbe avere un bambino?
- I diritti di un bambino dovrebbero essere: una famiglia composta da un padre di sesso maschile e da una madre di sesso femminile, un diritto alla salute, all'istruzione, alla socializzazione. È una serie di diritti che in Europa e nel mondo occidentale non ci sono più, perché l'imposizione è quella di distruggere completamente la cultura europea attraverso dei falsi diritti. Per esempio il matrimonio delle coppie gay, i diritti degli animali e altri che stanno scardinando nel DNA la nostra cultura, storia e tradizione.
- Per concludere, quale appello vorrebbe fare nella giornata internazionale per i diritti dell'infanzia?
- L'appello è di aiutarci a dare una concreta solidarietà, non servono grandi cifre, anche un euro o cinque euro. Ricordo che la nostra associazione è completamente governata dal volontariato e noi ogni anno con i bilanci certificati possiamo dire che su ogni euro percepito, 93-94 centesimi vanno a buon fine.

Mosca scandalizzata per attacco forze sicurezza ucraine contro osservatori OSCE
Nel Donbass gli attacchi con arma da fuoco da parte delle forze di sicurezza ucraine contro i rappresentanti dell'OSCE sono scandalosi.
Kiev, in qualità di Paese ospitante, dovrebbe garantire la sicurezza della missione, ha dichiarato il portavoce del ministero degli Esteri russo Alexander Lukashevich.
Secondo il diplomatico, le autorità ucraine complicano sempre più spesso il compito degli osservatori internazionali "trascurando categoricamente le garanzie che erano state date al momento del mandato di questa missione."
Il dicastero della diplomazia russa ha espresso la speranza che la missione reagisca a questi episodi inaccettabili.

Il segretario generale della NATO Jens Stoltenberg, giunto oggi in Estonia per una visita di un giorno, ha segnalato le preoccupazioni degli alleati per la possibile consegna della Francia delle portaelicotteri "Mistral" alla Russia.

Sergej Lavrov. Commentando le dichiarazioni del Dipartimento di Stato americano sulla scorrettezza di certe dichiarazioni, il ministro degli Esteri russo Sergej Lavrov ha detto di non ritenere di aver violato nessun canone etico.
In precedenza il portavoce del Dipartimento di Stato americano Jeff Rathke aveva dichiarato che il ministro degli Affari Esteri della Russia Sergej Lavrov era stato scorretto quando aveva commentato pubblicamente la sua conversazione con il segretario di Stato americano John Kerry.
In precedenza Lavrov aveva raccontato che il segretario di Stato americano John Kerry gli aveva consigliato di non prestare attenzione alle dichiarazioni del presidente Barack Obama secondo cui la Russia rappresenterebbe una delle minacce nel mondo.

Il ministero degli Esteri dell'Ucraina ha convocato l'ambasciatore ceco a Kiev Ivan Počuch per chiarire le recenti dichiarazioni del presidente ceco Miloš Zeman.

Analysis: Distinction between 'moderate Islamists' and 'militant extremists' is misleading for Western governments

The fight against Islamic State is now a top-priority of the international community. Islamic State was seriously underestimated, not only by the US. It took the international community so long to acknowledge the threat of Islamic State and to confront them, that they now seem already rather well settled in their newly acquired territory.
One of the root causes of this is that Western governments are not aware enough that there is no such thing as a clear distinction between moderate and terrorist Islamist organizations, nor such a thing as a clear distinction between mainstream Islamic organizations and Islamist (or Islamic political) organizations. This lack of awareness is also a danger for their home policies regarding radical expressions of Islam.
Hesitation
The initial hesitation of the US government might well have had to do with the idea that backing "moderate" Islamists would do more good than fighting the "terrorists". As a Gulf News Report (June 2014) wrote, "The President personally issued Presidential Study Directive 11 (PSD-11) in 2010, ordering an assessment of the Muslim Brotherhood and other "political Islamist" movements, including the ruling AKP in Turkey, ultimately concluding that the United States should shift from its longstanding policy of supporting "stability" in the Middle East and North Africa (that is, support for "stable regimes" even if they were authoritarian), to a policy of backing "moderate" Islamic political movements."
The USA is not the only country which has cherished the idea that within Islamism (or political Islam) a dividing line can be drawn between moderate Islamist groups and terrorist groups. In this view, moderate Islamist groups can be encouraged to refrain from violence when they are offered alternative avenues of dissent that do not require a resort to violence in order to be heard. Admittedly, such a tactic might not cause terrorist groups to cease their bombing, but it might stem the tide of recruits joining their ranks.
In this line of thinking, the main explanation for Islamist activity is dissent, or difference of opinion, that is not channeled in the right way. Others talk about grievances as the drive of Islamism. Dissent or grievances are undoubtedly part of the picture, but confining the analysis of the drive of Islamism to these concepts seems far too restricted and misses an essential element. Indeed, it presupposes frustrations, and does not reflect the spiritual motives of many Islamists. Many of them might sincerely wish to serve the world by establishing such a Caliphate that will bring peace and abundance of blessings when all bow down before Allah.

The speech delivered by Abu Muhammad al-'Adnani, the official spokesman of the Islamic State in Iraq and Sham (ISIS) reflects this view. Al-'Adnani announced the group's rebranding as the "Islamic State," declaring itself a Caliphate and its leader, Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, the Caliph Ibrahim in a speech entitled, "This is the Promise of Allah." The opening of his speech says, "Praise be to Allah, the Mighty and Strong. And may peace and blessings be upon the one sent with the sword as a mercy to all creation."
It is amazing how the tenor of this speech - combining a strong wish for supremacy with a conviction that the end-result is best for all if they submit - resembles the tenor of the top Muslim Brotherhood ideologue Yusuf al-Qaradawi's vision document written for the European Brotherhood organizations considered as "moderate" Islamists.
(Qaradawi devotes a large section of his book to the presence of Muslim minorities in Western countries).
If Islamists sincerely foster a positive drive for submitting the world to Allah, the distinction between "moderate" and "terrorist" Islamism is not that relevant when thinking about strategies to protect the world against a phenomenon like Islamic State. In fact, they share the same agenda. This implies that no category of Islamism can be lured into an agenda other than submission of the world to Allah, although modalities may differ over location and time.
Lorenzo Vidino, Senior Fellow at the Center for Security Studies, ETH Zurich has written a report about "Organized Islam in Western Europe: an attempt to categorize and assess influence".
Vidino states that "Over the past twenty years the number of Islamic religious organizations has significantly increased, a development stimulated by several factors. In the Muslim world, the decline of nationalism, commonly dated to the early 1970s, coincided with a return to various forms of Islamic piety. In Europe, first-, second-, and third-generation Muslim immigrants, struggling to adjust to life in the West, have also come to see Islam as providing cultural identity."
Vidino represents Islamic organizations in Western Europe as a continuum: (a) "extreme secularists"; (b) non-religious organizations created by individuals of Muslim background; (c) "mainstream" religious organizations; (d) organizations and movements that are increasingly conservative in their outlook, yet not Islamist; (e) Islamist organizations. The Islamist (or Islamic political) organizations - as the most radical part of the continuum - are further subdivided into 'participationists', 'non-violent rejectionists' and 'violent rejectionists'.
While no dividing line can reasonably be drawn within the Islamist part of the continuum, it is highly debatable if such a line can be drawn between this Islamist part at the one hand, and the center and center-right of the continuum at the other hand. According to Vidino, "the center of the continuum of European Muslim organizations is occupied by the large numbers of organizations that embrace a conservative interpretation of Islam – again, with important differences among them – but do not actively push for the introduction of Islamic customs or law in the public space." Vidino adds, "Moving rightwards from the middle of the continuum, one can find organizations and movements that are increasingly conservative in their outlook, yet not Islamist… Yet on many issues their positions are identical – if not, in some cases, more conservative – to those of many Islamists. The lines along this and most sections of the continuum are inevitably blurred."
Fragmentation
Vidino links his discussion of the Islamic continuum to the question of representativeness of organizations of Muslim communities in Western Europe. Vidino says: "Because of the Muslim community's internal fragmentation and the widespread reluctance of individuals to affiliate, no one Muslim organization operating in Western Europe has succeeded in attracting anything close to a majority of the relevant Muslim population. It is therefore very difficult to assess the popularity of each organization or to determine what percentage of European Muslims in each country should be placed on what part of the above-mentioned continuum."
Vidino's report suggests three approaches that might provide at least some idea about the popularity of various Muslim organizations: governmental outreach approaches, voting patterns and popularity of ideas. Vidino calls governmental outreach approaches and voting patterns, despite their enormous intrinsic flaws, relatively objective standards by which to assess the popularity and influence of European Muslim organizations, while to measure the popularity of ideas is largely intangible. However, it is at this level that the Islamist part of the continuum bridges into the more mainstream Islamic organizations - through the participationist Islamist organizations such as the European Brotherhood organizations.
According to Vidino, the participationist Islamist organizations "have had enormous success in exerting their power on Muslim communities - not through direct membership, which is generally quite limited, but through a diffuse cultural hegemony. Not all attendees of participationist Islamist organizations' conferences will embrace their views, but some will. And there are no other Islamic organizations that have the means to organize events even remotely on the scale of participationist Islamist organizations. If a young Muslim or a potential convert aims to know more about Islam, he or she is more likely to have easy access to participationist Islamist publications (notably from the European Brotherhood affiliated organizations) than to those of any other Islamic group."

Vidino concludes that "While their membership has remained fairly small, participationist Islamist organizations have shown an enormous ability to monopolize the Islamic discourse, making their interpretation of Islam perhaps not yet mainstream, but at least the most readily available, and putting their ideological stamp on any Islam-related issue, be it strictly religious or more properly political. Concepts and positions introduced by participationist Islamist organizations have been absorbed, often almost subconsciously, by large segments of European Muslim populations, irrespective of their religious and political views."
It follows that Western governments have to be aware that there is nor such thing as a clear distinction between moderate and terrorist Islamist organizations nor a clear distinction between mainstream Islamic organizations and Islamist (or Islamic political) organizations. In fighting Islamic State and preparing to tackle returning jihadis, as well as in preventing future jihadis from leaving their country, Western governments should not turn for 'moral compensation' to whatever non-terrorist organizations they know, believing they are radically different from the terrorist organizations.
Western governments should focus on certain key concepts that are commonplace throughout most of the Islamic continuum - shari'a, jihad and kafir – and clearly communicate what they accept and what they do not - throughout the whole continuum. Only then can a reasonable degree of co-existence among people be maintained and the basic features of multiculturalism in Western Europe, as well as in other democratic nations, secured.

In recent history, genocides have often been accompanied by the preparatory dehumanization of victims.
In 1994, in Rwanda, for example, the Hutu interhamwe labelled the Tutsis as "termites" or "cockroaches" before they killed more than one million (mainly) Tutsis. Similarly, before World War II, the Nazi regime in Germany often featured illustrations of Jews in cartoons and other propaganda materials looking decrepit or sub-human, and forced Jews to wear yellow stars saying "Achtung Juden (Warning: a Jew)."
In other instances where many civilians died, such as in the predominantly Ibo breakaway region of "Biafra" in 1967, the term "kwari kwari (mosquitos)" was used to refer to the rebellious people, who suffered up to one-million deaths during the suppression of the rebellion.

against them, but the one common factor behind all genocides or mass killings is that the victims are dehumanized before the violence can take place. One of the more recent challenges in preventing a possible next genocide or mass killing is that, for the first time in recent memory, the perpetrators of such attacks are using and citing religion to justify their violence.
From Boko Haram, to the Islamic State (IS) in Iraq and Syria, to the Taliban, to al-Qaeda in its global operations, the religious ideology to justify the kidnapping, killing and rape of tens of thousands of people is takfirism.
Etymology and Background of 'Takfirism'
The word kafir in Arabic – incorporated into almost all languages that Muslims speak – translates most closely to "infidel" in English. Takfir is based on the root word kafir and most closely means the "act of labeling another person an infidel." Takfirism therefore refers to the doctrine in Islam of labeling other people as infidels. Usually, the label is applied to those who are not Sunni Muslims. (Sunnis comprise more than 80% of Muslims around the world; they maintain that their religious belief and practice is truer than other sects, such as the Shi'a). However, also assumed under the concept of kafir in Islam are "apostates," or those who have disassociated from their Muslim background and no longer consider themselves Muslims (in many cases, they have adopted Christianity or another religion). The doctrine of takfirism is broad enough to include the labeling of all non-Sunni Muslims as kafirs, therefore including those Muslim background believers who left their religion.
Since the U.S. and Allied war in Iraq in 2003, the doctrine of takfirism has been increasingly used to target Muslims who are perceived to collaborate with the U.S. and other "infidel" powers by, for example, enlisting in Iraqi security services, participating in democratic elections, or migrating to Iraq to work for companies involved with the U.S. forces. Abdul Basit, the pseudonym of a scholar for a Taliban media wing called 'Neda ul‐Jihad' ('call of jihad' in Arabic) even advocated that ordinary Muslims (who are not linked to the government or indeed to foreigners) are also kafir, simply on the basis that they did not actively participate in jihad.

The overwhelming majority of Islamic scholars (ulema) hold that the punishment for those who are kafir is, for individuals, the death penalty. But there is not consensus as to whether it is applicable to entire groups. In other words, one individual who leaves Islam for another religion, or becomes an atheist, would be subject to the death penalty, but if an entire group in a previous generation left Islam for another religious belief, such as the Bahais or the Ahmediyas, they as an entire group are no longer subject to be killed en masse.
This is nonetheless contradicted by the fact that whether or not their predecessors left Islam, in this life they are still seen as kafir for being non-Sunni Muslims and are therefore, according to the harshest of takfirists, subject to the death penalty.
An alternative to killing people labelled kafir is nonetheless available; namely if the kafir pays jizyah, or tax, to the Muslim rulers, then this will afford them "protection." In recent years, takfirist organizations such as Boko Haram, the Islamic State and the Taliban have employed jizyah to pressure minorities, such as Christians, Shias or Sikhs, to pay them money for "protection", or to justify rape and enslavement or expulsion - as justification or compensation in cases where such jizyah is not paid.
An issue of debate is whether takfirism is a spin-off of Salafism or a separate doctrine altogether. Salafism is an interpretation of Islam rooted in Saudi Arabia (there known as wahabbism) that calls for Islamic practice based on the ways of the salafs, or devout followers of the Prophet Muhammad in the 7th century. It is hostile toward mystical Sufism, and syncretic brands of Islam that combine elements of local tradition - and it allows followers to practise takfir.
The Syrian-born Spanish national and Al-Qaeda ideologue (with a focus on "jihad") Abu Mus'ab al‐Suri, for example, argued that "some prominent men from the Salafi‐Jihadi wave, or at least those scholars…who followed them, offered interpretations which were either extremist, or were articulated in such a general manner that some ignorant jihadis took them a step further and widen[ened] the concept of takfirism".
As a result of this, according to al-Suri, the difference between mainstream jihadism and takfirism has become so narrow that the two are nearly inseparable today.
(al-Suri is believed to have been captured by Pakistan and sent to Syria in 2011 and then either freed by President Bashar al-Assad at the start of the Syrian uprising in 2012, or is still in Syrian prison).
Others have argued that "the concept of global jihad and takfir" was developed on the basis of Egyptian Muslim Brotherhood founder Sayyid Qutb's ideology, whose main notion was that the Muslim community (umma) was dead so long as it was not fighting to extend Sharia everywhere in the world.
Yet others argue that takfir is a "stepping stone" to engaging in violence against secular Muslim rulers, and those who are perceived to be supportive of those rulers, such as Christians, foreigners or those who participate in elections. Still others suggest that takfirism is merely a product of strictly textual interpretations from Islam itself, such as Qur'an (4:89), which says: [Infidels] wish that you should disbelieve as they disbelieve, and then you would be equal; therefore take not to yourselves friends of them, until they emigrate in the way of God; then, if they turn their backs, take them, and slay them wherever you find them; take not to yourselves any one of them as friend or helper.
Conclusion
Whatever the outcome of these debates, it is clear that almost all of the most violent actors in the global jihad, employ takfiri ideology. We need to understand this concept of 'infidel' to understand militant Islam.
Al Shabaab's leaders, for example, state that Western citizens and their allies are 'kuffar' (plural of 'kafir' and that it is halal (lawful) to kill and rob non-Muslims. "Boko Haram similarly states "that we shall make the country ungovernable, kill and eliminate irresponsible political leaders of all leanings, hunt and gun down those who oppose the rule of Sharia in Nigeria and ensure that the kafir does not go unpunished".
The Islamic State has forced Christians to leave their homes, burned their churches and raped or "forcibly married" Christian women, all in the name of takfirism.
As a result, it can be said that following takfirism is the means by which these jihadist groups justify their attacks on their enemies, who include anyone who is not a Sunni Muslim and possibly even Sunni Muslims who do not side with them. With Christians and other non-Sunni Muslims increasingly becoming the targets of murders en masse by takfirist groups, it raises the concern that the next mass genocide – or, more likely, religicide will be – or is already – being carried out by takfiris. It would appear that this doctrine and ideology must be confronted before the world experiences another "never again" moment. We need to understand this concept of kafir or 'infidel' to understand violent extremist tendencies infiltrating Muslim populations today.
One method of confronting the threat from takfirism is to prohibit speech and advocacy in support of this ideology because it infringes on the rights and well-being of others. This is especially imperative in countries where it is not yet so prevalent that the takfiris could launch their jihad in response, such as Central Asia or Europe. Some countries are likely already late in confronting the threat, while others are on the cusp of being too late, such as Cameroon, where Salafist-sponsored mosques and madrassahs emerged in the late 1980s and 1990s, which is about 10 years later than its neighbor, Nigeria, which is now struggling greatly with takfirism. It is important for governments and civil society to de-legitimize takfirist ideology.
Another key way to stop takfirism is through protecting freedom of religion. Since takfirism calls for the punishment of death to non-Sunni Muslims, it is inherently a violation of the freedom of religion. Any preacher that espouses such ideas would be subject to prohibition or bans. Thus far, it seems only in countries like Uzbekistan, Chad and Kazakhstan that the threat of takfirism being taken seriously, but these are the same countries that human rights groups often criticize most vehemently for violating religious rights, although they intend to protect their own religious identities and freedoms. This is an issue that requires further understanding, discussion and resolution.
The world must take notice of the doctrine of takfirism before it is too late. If any continent should recognize these signs, it should be Europe, given its history and understanding of how a small and seemingly marginal group of people can within a decade's time manage to become extremely powerful. While history will not repeat itself the same way as in World War II, history does, in the words of Mark Twain, "rhyme," and this is what we are seeing across the European, African, Middle Eastern, and Central Asian landscapes today.

Scores of policemen are camping in a remote Indian village following an Oct. 25 attack on Christians by Hindu fundamentalists.
Government officials characterize the violence in Madhota village, in the Bastar district of Chhattisgarh state in central India, as a "clash between two communities." Arun Pannalal, president of Chhattisgarh Christian Forum, calls it a "cleverly planned attack."
That's not the only point on which Pannalal and local officials disagree.
"Eleven of our people have been hospitalised. Eight of them have serious injuries," Pannalal told World Watch Monitor on Oct. 29.
"Ten people were injured," countered Ankit Anand, the district collector — the head of Bastar's government administration. The 10 include five Christians and five of the attackers, he said.
In the wake of the violence, more than 100 police officers are camped in Madhota.
"Yes, policemen are there in the village," Anand said. "We have to maintain law and order."
The roots of the trouble go back a week, in the village of Bhanpuri. That's where Dinesh Kashyap, a member of India's Parliament from Bastar, washed the feet of some Christians and declared they had undergone "ghar wapsi," or homecoming, to Hinduism.
Kashyap is a member of the Bharatiya Janata Party, the political home of Hindu nationalism and which won a majority in the national Parliament in elections earlier this year.
The Bhanpuri event raised tension between Christians and fundamentalist Hindus in the region. In Madhota, traditional drumbeats summoned residents to assemble with government officials and police on the morning of Oct. 25 to discuss the resulting "simmering tension." Christians gathered awaiting the officials, Pannalal said.
"But the officials never came," he said. "Fundamentalists came in a truck and attacked the Christians."
Anand said six people – four Hindus and two Christians — were arrested after the "clash."

Bhanpuri, demanding that the case against them be withdrawn, said Rev. John Daniel, president of the Bastar chapter of Chhattisgarh Christian Forum and a Pentecostal minister.
"I have been here for 40 years. Whenever Christians are attacked, this is the pattern. Before the Christian victims would reach the police station, the attackers would have filed a case against them with the police. That's why innocent Christians have been arrested," Daniel told World Watch Monitor.
Anand, however, said the two Christians who were arrested had been released Oct. 29, while the four Hindus, charged with more serious offenses, are still in detention.
"We have been getting complaints these days that Christians are not even allowed to draw water from the (common) tube wells," Daniel said after attending an Oct. 29 "peace meeting" convened by the district collector.
Elsewhere, police are preventing Christians from entering the hospital at Jagdalpur, 30 kilometres from Madhota, to which injured Christians had been rushed in a truck, Pannalal said.
Asked on Oct. 29 whether police have filed any case against Dinesh Kashyap, the Member of Parliament who conducted the "reconversion" ritual in Bhanpuri village, Anand said "I am not aware of such a report and no Christian has mentioned it in their meeting with me today or given in it in writing."
A day earlier, on Oct. 28, the Indian Express, a national newspaper, reported that "the present controversy is rooted in an attempt by the right-wing groups to take these converted tribals to the Hindu fold." It referenced the MP Dinesh Kashyap, saying he "had visited the [Bhanpuri] area and initiated" the reconversion of Christians in the village.

The Turkish education system's mandatory religion classes are not fair to students who do not follow the country's majority Sunni Islam and must amend its policies, according to a recent verdict of the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR).
As Turkey is a signatory of the European Convention on Human Rights, the ECHR decision is binding.
Religion classes, starting in elementary schools, are, according to the Turkish Constitution to be neutral lessons on religion, but critics say they impose Sunni Muslim rituals in class that many Turks - including non-Sunni Muslims, Christians, Jews and atheists - don't espouse.
Turkey is a secular Muslim state, with almost 97% of the population nominally Muslim.
While Sunni Muslims represent about 70-80%, about 15-25% of the 75 million population are Alevi, a mystical school of Shia Islamic theology. This makes them the country's largest religious minority, though they are not recognized as such.
Cultural differences
Turkey insists that their differences are cultural, and thus does not grant them exemption from religion classes.
However, in September the ECHR ordered Turkey to allow students to be exempt from classes when their parents request it, without them having to disclose their religious beliefs.
Then on Oct. 9 the Education Minister Nabi Avci announced that Turkish schools will soon offer an elective in Christianity. However, currently Christians and Jews are in fact exempt from the compulsory courses offered from fourth grade, age 9, and throughout high school. By conservative estimates there are under 100,000 Christians in Turkey.
Religious freedoms expert, Mine Yildirim, of the Norwegian Helsinki Committee (NHC) for Human Rights says that this announcement, though a welcome move towards diversity and inclusion, seems to entirely miss the point of the European Court's verdict.
"Adding Christianity as an optional course does not address any of the outstanding and important freedom of religion or belief problems in the education system," Yildirim told World Watch Monitor. Yildirim is the project head of the NHC Freedom of Belief Initiative for Turkey.
On Oct. 10, the NHC sent an open letter to Turkish Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoglu, urging him to take measures to revise the policies on Turkey's mandatory religious instruction book and to bring its content in line with international human rights requirements.
Specifically the European Court of Human Rights had already ordered Turkey to lift the "mandatory" status of the courses and emphasized the State's duty of neutrality and impartiality in regulating matters of religion.

"These lessons are not an objective lesson about religion, but religious instruction in a particular religion. In the present situation, Alevi, Bahai, atheists and Sunni Muslims who do not find the Islamic education provided by the state to be in line with their beliefs still must attend the classes."
The issue of the country's compulsory religious classes was brought up in court in 2011 by 14 Alevi Turks. In 2007 the Alevi community won a similar court case at the ECHR, but Turkey took no steps then to amend the curriculum.
Smokescreen
Dogan Bermek, Vice President for the Federation of Alevi Foundations told WWM he thought the decision to offer a course in Christianity was a smokescreen to appease and get "the Europeans off their case."
"When there is a problem or a decision like this here, the government's first statement is that 'here in Turkey we live as brothers, so why are you doing this to us?' Bermek said, "but this is just brotherhood for show, not for the sake of real brotherhood. They are saying 'we give opportunities to Christians and other minorities, but don't mess with our Muslim issues."
Bermek estimates that there are about 5 million Alevi children faced with the problem of mandatory religion classes in Turkey, in contrast with the estimated few thousands of Christian and Jewish children. Armenians, Greeks, and Jews have their own elementary and secondary "minority schools" recognized by the Ministry of Education, though not all parents choose to send their children to them.
Minority schools provide education from pre-school to high-school and already offer religious instruction courses in their respective faiths.
The course in Christianity
The new curriculum has been authored in a unique collaboration between Christian leaders in Istanbul representing different communities. The authoring committee is made up of nine clergy members of Greek, Armenian and Syriac Orthodox backgrounds as well as Catholics and Protestants.
One, Pastor Behnan Konutgan of the Bible House in Istanbul, said that the Ministry of Education gave the authoring committee the green light to continue developing the Christian religion curriculum this month.
The committee has prepared text books for children in fourth and fifth grade, aged nine to eleven - the drafts for which they submitted to the Turkish Ministry of Education last year. The committee plans to next write text books for students in eighth and ninth grade.
Hurdles to its implementation
Yet the new curriculum raises many questions about its implementation such as how and where the classes will be taught.
"There are more questions than answers," Yildirim said.
"If the Ministry of Education is not willing and ready to become flexible, such courses will be only a possibility in theory and never in practice."
Flexible would mean collecting students from different schools to fulfill the required number of students needed to offer an elective course, which is 12. Yildirim said the Ministry of Education could also consider opening the class to fewer students, or else the curriculum won't address the needs of the Christian community.
World Watch Monitor spoke with a Syriac Orthodox Christian in his twenties who asked to remain anonymous. His entire primary and secondary education took place in Istanbul's public schools. He said that in his classes there were usually up to three Christians and during religion class they sat in the school canteen.
He said he thought the proposed Christianity elective is currently practically impossible to offer in Turkish private and public schools.
An administrator at Turkish Armenian schools, Garo Paylan said that while he found the proposed course "positive" he asked "who will teach the course [in public schools]?" in his interview with a human rights online publication Bianet.
It is not clear whether non-Christian students would be allowed to take the class in Christianity, or whether students would first have to prove they are Christians.
Islamic religion classes defended
Though the decision of the ECHR is binding on Turkey, its top leaders brushed off the court ruling, provoking criticism and protests. Prime Minister Davutoglu defended the Islamic religion curriculum saying "it is a requirement for an atheist to know about religious culture, just like I should know about Marxism even though I'm not a Marxist," Turkish newspaper Today's Zaman reported.
President Recep Tayyip Erdogan criticized the ECHR ruling calling it wrong and saying drug use, violence and racism will spread if the classes on religion are put to an end. "If compulsory courses on religion are challenged, why do they complain about drugs or terrorism?" he said, according to Today's Zaman.ected Anand's attention to the national headlines of a day earlier, he said: "We will look into it."
He also said he will look into whether the present situation is linked to tension in other Bastar villages where village councils have passed resolutions that outlaw the open practice of Christianity.
"Christians had complained to us about these resolutions. I had told them that these have no legal validity," Anand said.
Christian-rights advocates have sued the Bastar government over the restrictions. "The government has been asked by the (state) high court to respond to our petition about these resolutions," Pannalal said. "But they have not responded to this yet."
He said the subsequent attacks on Christians are a "ploy to intimidate us."

Turkish authorities have sealed a Protestant church in Southeast Turkey and ordered its American pastor fined and deported on charges of "working illegally."
Lawyers filed a court appeal Sept. 26 to postpone the deportation, protesting what Turkey's Association of Protestant Churches called an "absolutely arbitrary" ruling against the Gaziantep congregation and its foreign pastor.
Local police officials sealed the premises of the New Life Church on Aug. 28. Just over two weeks later, on Sept. 14, they detained its pastor, Patrick Jensen, with order from Turkey's Interior Ministry to deport him immediately.
A U.S. citizen living in Gaziantep since 2005, Jensen was ordered to pay 3,043 Turkish Lira (US $1,350) for violating Law No. 5326 of the Turkish labor laws, which require a work permit for legal employment status. He declined to pay the fine, contending he was a volunteer serving in the church, which he said an inspection board under the Labor Ministry had mistakenly classified as a place of business.

After inquiries by Jensen's lawyer the day after his arrest, the pastor signed a document permitting his deportation order to be appealed to Gaziantep's Administrative Court.
Jensen was held for 30 hours, then allowed to return home while his case is pending. But his Turkish residence permit, valid through November 2015, was cancelled, with a temporary 30-day permit issued until the court rules on his appeal, which will be conducted by legal briefs, not oral argument.
Jensen started the small Protestant congregation nine years ago, when he and his family moved to Gaziantep. Between 30 and 40 adults attend the Turkish worship services each Sunday, he said.
"The authorities' attitude toward us has changed in the last six months," he told World Watch Monitor. "It seemed we were being viewed negatively, as if we were enemies. Some pressure is being put on us, although our open presence and activities here had not been an issue before."
Without any other options for a place of worship, the church group has met informally in a park for several Sundays, and then in private homes.
The fledgling congregation has not yet applied for official status as an association, which is the only legal option open to register new Christian congregations.
"Foreign clergy are experiencing problems with work permits," General Secretary Umut Sahin of the Association of Protestant Churches told Agos newspaper after the Gaziantep church was sealed. "It is not clear according to which criteria they say yes or no. Currently only four Protestant church leaders have been able to obtain this visa status."
Despite an estimated 5,000 Protestant Christians meeting in 120 small congregations in Turkey, the state prohibits institutions for the theological training of their clergy. The same ban prevents the traditional Orthodox, Armenian and Syriac communities from opening seminaries for their local priests and church workers.
"So new faith groups, particular those who are small and relatively new, need foreign clergy," Mine Yildirim, head of the Norwegian Helsinki Committee's Freedom of Belief Initiative Project in Turkey, told Agos. "However, there is no open, simple and clear way to bring these people here officially. As a result…with whatever excuse, officials can easily punish people, marginalizing them by calling them illegal workers."
