As we spoke further, we realized that we had much more in common than we could ever imagine. We both studied journalism, were affiliated with the Interdisciplinary Center in Herzliya, loved Dave Matthews Band and Pink Floyd, but more importantly, we figured out what our respective callings were earlier than most and decided to pursue them with vigor. "We're just two lost souls swimming in a fish bowl, year after year wish you were here," reads part of the song. Sotloff's sister, Lauren, chose the song and played it for the congregation to hear. Poignant doesn't begin to describe the moment. The rabbi reminded everyone that life is how we spend that dash between our birth year and our death date. Steve, your dash may have been shorter than we had hoped, but to me it was an Olympic sprint. You were committed to the truth. You chose to venture to the most dangerous places on the planet because sharing the story was worth the risk of your own mortality. You unmasked the evils of our world today and you stared at it straight in the face. And you truly loved doing it. It's a sad day that commemorates the destruction of Jerusalem by the Romans in 70 A.D. and the loss of Jewish sovereignty in our land of Israel. If you have ever been in Israel on Tisha B'Av, you would be shocked to see that it feels very much like a festive occasion. After waiting 2,000 years we got Israel back in 1948, and in 1967 the Old City of Jerusalem became ours again. No one could imagine being without either again, and tens of thousands of people jam the Kotel in celebration to confirm this.

The sheer joy we feel about our homeland has made it difficult to grasp the emotional essence of Tisha B'Av. But not this year. Jewish children have been kidnapped and killed. Thousands of rockets have been shot at us. Dozens of tunnels have been dug into our land for sole purpose of doing harm to Jews. What if these things didn't happen, and I had you simply imagine them as an exercise to get you to understand Tisha B'Av. In imaginary form, you would be horrified. In the concrete, you reach a real, visceral understanding of the meaning of Tisha B'Av. Tisha B'av is about another act of imagination What would your life be like if we didn't have Israel? How would you feel? What would you do? This year in particular forces us to face the (sadly) eternal truth of Tisha B'Av we Jews always survive, but there's always someone who doesn't want us to. The name of the commemoration is simply the date (unlike Passover or Chanukah). It's the ninth day of the Jewish month of Av. An interesting point to make Av is the eleventh month of the Jewish year. So Tisha B'Av is 9/11. Every year. That's the reality of Jewish history.
But there's a flip side to Tisha B'Av. We happen to live in a time when Israel is ours, and can defend itself. The day should motivate us to recognize the gift that this moment in Jewish history has bestowed on us.

The Lebanese army is investigating photographs purportedly showing a second soldier who had been beheaded by the Islamic State, a military source said Saturday.

An apparent IS supporter posted a photo on Twitter showing a masked man wearing black, holding the severed head of a bearded young man over his body.
The corpse is lying in a pool of blood and, in the background, a man is holding up the black IS flag.
An ISIS commander told the Turkish the Anadolu news agency Saturday that his group beheaded the soldier for attempting to escape.
"Yes, we slaughtered Lebanese soldier Abbas Medlej because he attempted to escape," the ISIS leader told Anadolu, according to the Daily Star.
"The army has received the images, but we cannot confirm or deny whether they are authentic," said the source, speaking on condition of anonymity.
The image emerged four days after DNA testing confirmed that the body of a man whom jihadists had said they beheaded was that of Lebanese soldier Ali Sayyed.
Sayyed had been captured by jihadists from the Al-Qaeda affiliated Al-Nusra Front and the IS, along with some 30 soldiers and police in the eastern town of Arsal last month.
They were seized during major fighting against jihadists who had flooded in from neighbouring Syria.
Earlier Saturday, the body of a Lebanese civilian kidnapped and killed by jihadists was handed over to his family in Arsal.
Kayed Ghadada was abducted last month after the battle, which killed 20 soldiers, dozens of jihadists and 16 civilians.
The fighting in Arsal was the most serious border incident since the Syrian conflict erupted in March 2011.
The militants have reportedly sought to negotiate the release of the hostages in exchange for Islamist prisoners held in Lebanese jails.
Lebanese officials have rejected holding talks on a possible prisoner swap, but have said Qatar is mediating negotiations on the issue.

Un apparente è sostenitore ha postato una foto su Twitter che mostra un uomo mascherato che indossa nero, tenendo la testa mozzata di un giovane uomo con la barba sul suo corpo.

Un comandante ISIS ha detto alla agenzia di stampa turca Anadolu Sabato che il suo gruppo decapitato il soldato per aver tentato di fuggire.
"Sì, abbiamo massacrati soldato libanese Abbas Medlej perché ha tentato di fuggire", ha detto il leader ISIS Anadolu, secondo il Daily Star.
"L'esercito ha ricevuto le immagini, ma non siamo in grado di confermare o smentire se sono autentiche", ha detto la fonte, parlando in condizione di anonimato.
L'immagine emersa quattro giorni dopo il test del DNA ha confermato che il corpo di un uomo che jihadisti avevano detto che decapitati era quello di soldato libanese Ali Sayyed.
Sayyed era stato catturato dai jihadisti di Al-Qaeda affiliato di Al-Nusra anteriore e la IS, insieme a circa 30 soldati e poliziotti nella città orientale di Arsal mese scorso.
Essi sono stati sequestrati nel corso pesanti combattimenti contro i jihadisti che si erano allagate dalla vicina Siria.
In precedenza Sabato, il corpo di un civile libanese rapiti e uccisi dai jihadisti è stato consegnato alla sua famiglia in Arsal.
Kayed Ghadada è stato rapito il mese scorso dopo la battaglia, che ha ucciso 20 soldati, decine di jihadisti e 16 civili.
I combattimenti in Arsal è stato il più grave incidente di frontiera dall'inizio del conflitto siriano scoppiata nel marzo 2011.
I militanti hanno riferito cercato di negoziare il rilascio degli ostaggi in cambio di prigionieri islamici detenuti nelle carceri libanesi.
Funzionari libanesi hanno respinto colloqui su un possibile scambio di prigionieri, ma hanno detto che il Qatar sta mediando negoziati sulla questione.

The Islamist former head of state already faces the death penalty in several trials, and his supporters have been the target of a deadly crackdown by the authorities since his ouster in July 2013.
No date has yet been set for the new trial for Morsi, who is suspected of providing the sensitive documents to the energy-rich Gulf state during his single year of turbulent rule.
Morsi will go on trial for having "handed over to Qatari intelligence documents linked to national security in exchange for one million dollars (772,000 euros)", the prosecutor said in a statement.
Ten other defendants will be tried alongside Morsi, including his former secretary Amin El-Serafi, the ex-director of his office Ahmed Abdel Atti and Ibrahim Mohamed Helal, who is identified as a chief editor of the Doha-based Al-Jazeera network.
In the statement, the prosecutor said Morsi and Abdel Atti gave El-Serafi "extremely sensitive documents concerning the army, its deployment and weaponry" and he in turn gave them to Helal and to a Qatari intelligence operative. It said that intermediaries, who were not identified, were used to send the documents to Helal and the Qataris.
The papers included documents from the "general and military intelligence offices of the State Security" apparatus, the prosecutor said. Morsi, El-Serafi and Abdel Atti are all behind bars. Helal's whereabouts are unknown. In March the interior ministry accused El-Serafi of handing over to an Al-Jazeera chief editor and to Morsi's Muslim Brotherhood documents regarding the army, its weaponry and troop deployments.
Relations between Egypt and Qatar soured after Morsi's ouster, as Cairo criticised Doha's backing for the Brotherhood — designated a terrorist group after Morsi's overthrow on July 3, 2013. Qatar has denounced Egypt's crackdown on Morsi supporters which has left more than 1,400 people dead since his ouster.
Thousands more have been detained and imprisoned, and hundreds have been sentenced to death in speedy mass trials.
Morsi is already on trial in three separate cases — one over the killing of protesters during his presidency, another for allegedly conspiring with foreign powers including Iran to destabilise Egypt, and a third over a jailbreak during the 2011 uprising that ousted strongman Hosni Mubarak.
Morsi could face the death penalty if convicted.
