He shared with me that it was never about breaking the big story or
getting to hard-to-reach officials. "I learned Arabic, so that I could
speak with the common people," he said. "I want nothing more than to
share the stories of the untold to the people of the West." And so he
did, with articles in TIME, The Jerusalem Report and Foreign Policy
magazines "Latakia's Lament", "Syrian Purgatory" and other fitting
bylines. As we spoke further, we realized that we had much more in
common than we could ever imagine. We both studied journalism, were
affiliated with the Interdisciplinary Center in Herzliya, loved Dave
Matthews Band and Pink Floyd, but more importantly, we figured out what
our respective callings were earlier than most and decided to pursue
them with vigor. All we wanted to do was write stories and travel to
places others wouldn't dream of, to lend a voice to those who had none,
and to serve as their lifeline to the world. As we all know, Steve lost
his lifeline when he was beheaded by ISIS terrorists in a video released
Tuesday, after being held captive in Syria for a year. Steve's 2013
August capture reads like one of his nail-biting articles, with only
bits and pieces recently being revealed to the world. Following his
kidnapping, a small group of his friends and associates raced to
systematically remove any reference online to his Israeli and Jewish
roots. The US and Israeli media agreed to cooperate in concealing this
information, in order not to further jeopardize his life. Sources in
this inner circle have hinted that much more of Steve's story is yet to
come. Today, at a memorial service in Miami, we remembered Steve not for

lyrics from the song "Wish You Were Here" by Pink Floyd was handed out
to guests. "We're just two lost souls swimming in a fish bowl, year
after year wish you were here," reads part of the song. Sotloff's
sister, Lauren, chose the song and played it for the congregation to
hear. Poignant doesn't begin to describe the moment. The rabbi reminded
everyone that life is how we spend that dash between our birth year and
our death date. Steve, your dash may have been shorter than we had
hoped, but to me it was an Olympic sprint. You were committed to the
truth. You chose to venture to the most dangerous places on the planet
because sharing the story was worth the risk of your own mortality. You
unmasked the evils of our world today and you stared at it straight in
the face. And you truly loved doing it. Today, I say goodbye to you, my
old friend, and I am so amazed how you have lived on so powerfully in

B'Av will begin in less than thirty minutes East Coast time. It's a fast
day on the Jewish calendar. It's a sad day that commemorates the
destruction of Jerusalem by the Romans in 70 A.D. and the loss of Jewish
sovereignty in our land of Israel. If you have ever been in Israel on
Tisha B'Av, you would be shocked to see that it feels very much like a
festive occasion. After waiting 2,000 years we got Israel back in 1948,
and in 1967 the Old City of Jerusalem became ours again. No one could
imagine being without either again, and tens of thousands of people jam
the Kotel in celebration to confirm this.

many years. The sheer joy we feel about our homeland has made it
difficult to grasp the emotional essence of Tisha B'Av. But not this
year. Jewish children have been kidnapped and killed. Thousands of
rockets have been shot at us. Dozens of tunnels have been dug into our
land for sole purpose of doing harm to Jews. What if these things didn't
happen, and I had you simply imagine them as an exercise to get you to
understand Tisha B'Av. In imaginary form, you would be horrified. In the
concrete, you reach a real, visceral understanding of the meaning of
Tisha B'Av. Tisha B'av is about another act of imagination What would
your life be like if we didn't have Israel? How would you feel? What
would you do? This year in particular forces us to face the (sadly)
eternal truth of Tisha B'Av we Jews always survive, but there's always
someone who doesn't want us to. The name of the commemoration is simply
the date (unlike Passover or Chanukah). It's the ninth day of the Jewish
month of Av. An interesting point to make Av is the eleventh month of
the Jewish year. So Tisha B'Av is 9/11. Every year. That's the reality
of Jewish history.
But there's a flip side to Tisha B'Av. We happen
to live in a time when Israel is ours, and can defend itself. The day
should motivate us to recognize the gift that this moment in Jewish
history has bestowed on us.
Jews fast so we can feel. You should
fast for at least some part of the day. You should pick a time frame,

The Lebanese army is investigating photographs purportedly showing a
second soldier who had been beheaded by the Islamic State, a military
source said Saturday.

An apparent IS supporter posted a photo on Twitter showing a masked man
wearing black, holding the severed head of a bearded young man over his
body.
The corpse is lying in a pool of blood and, in the background, a man is holding up the black IS flag.
An ISIS commander told the Turkish the Anadolu news agency Saturday
that his group beheaded the soldier for attempting to escape.
"Yes,
we slaughtered Lebanese soldier Abbas Medlej because he attempted to
escape," the ISIS leader told Anadolu, according to the Daily Star.
"The army has received the images, but we cannot confirm or deny whether
they are authentic," said the source, speaking on condition of
anonymity.
The image emerged four days after DNA testing confirmed
that the body of a man whom jihadists had said they beheaded was that of
Lebanese soldier Ali Sayyed.
Sayyed had been captured by jihadists
from the Al-Qaeda affiliated Al-Nusra Front and the IS, along with some
30 soldiers and police in the eastern town of Arsal last month.
They were seized during major fighting against jihadists who had flooded in from neighbouring Syria.
Earlier Saturday, the body of a Lebanese civilian kidnapped and killed by jihadists was handed over to his family in Arsal.
Kayed Ghadada was abducted last month after the battle, which killed 20 soldiers, dozens of jihadists and 16 civilians.
The fighting in Arsal was the most serious border incident since the Syrian conflict erupted in March 2011.
The militants have reportedly sought to negotiate the release of the
hostages in exchange for Islamist prisoners held in Lebanese jails.
Lebanese officials have rejected holding talks on a possible prisoner
swap, but have said Qatar is mediating negotiations on the issue.

Un apparente è sostenitore ha postato una foto su Twitter che mostra un

L'immagine emersa quattro giorni dopo il
test del DNA ha confermato che il corpo di un uomo che jihadisti
avevano detto che decapitati era quello di soldato libanese Ali Sayyed.
Sayyed era stato catturato dai jihadisti di Al-Qaeda affiliato di
Al-Nusra anteriore e la IS, insieme a circa 30 soldati e poliziotti
nella città orientale di Arsal mese scorso.
Essi sono stati sequestrati nel corso pesanti combattimenti contro i jihadisti che si erano allagate dalla vicina Siria.
In precedenza Sabato, il corpo di un civile libanese rapiti e uccisi
dai jihadisti è stato consegnato alla sua famiglia in Arsal.
Kayed Ghadada è stato rapito il mese scorso dopo la battaglia, che ha ucciso 20 soldati, decine di jihadisti e 16 civili.
I combattimenti in Arsal è stato il più grave incidente di frontiera
dall'inizio del conflitto siriano scoppiata nel marzo 2011.
I
militanti hanno riferito cercato di negoziare il rilascio degli ostaggi
in cambio di prigionieri islamici detenuti nelle carceri libanesi.
Funzionari libanesi hanno respinto colloqui su un possibile scambio di
prigionieri, ma hanno detto che il Qatar sta mediando negoziati sulla
questione.

The Islamist former head of state already faces the death penalty in
several trials, and his supporters have been the target of a deadly
crackdown by the authorities since his ouster in July 2013.
No date
has yet been set for the new trial for Morsi, who is suspected of
providing the sensitive documents to the energy-rich Gulf state during
his single year of turbulent rule.
Morsi will go on trial for having
"handed over to Qatari intelligence documents linked to national
security in exchange for one million dollars (772,000 euros)", the
prosecutor said in a statement.
Ten other defendants will be tried
alongside Morsi, including his former secretary Amin El-Serafi, the
ex-director of his office Ahmed Abdel Atti and Ibrahim Mohamed Helal,
who is identified as a chief editor of the Doha-based Al-Jazeera
network.
In the statement, the prosecutor said Morsi and Abdel Atti
gave El-Serafi "extremely sensitive documents concerning the army, its
deployment and weaponry" and he in turn gave them to Helal and to a
Qatari intelligence operative. It said that intermediaries, who were not
identified, were used to send the documents to Helal and the Qataris.
The papers included documents from the "general and military
intelligence offices of the State Security" apparatus, the prosecutor
said. Morsi, El-Serafi and Abdel Atti are all behind bars. Helal's
whereabouts are unknown. In March the interior ministry accused
El-Serafi of handing over to an Al-Jazeera chief editor and to Morsi's
Muslim Brotherhood documents regarding the army, its weaponry and troop
deployments.
Relations between Egypt and Qatar soured after Morsi's
ouster, as Cairo criticised Doha's backing for the Brotherhood —
designated a terrorist group after Morsi's overthrow on July 3, 2013.
Qatar has denounced Egypt's crackdown on Morsi supporters which has left
more than 1,400 people dead since his ouster.
Thousands more have been detained and imprisoned, and hundreds have been sentenced to death in speedy mass trials.
Morsi is already on trial in three separate cases — one over the
killing of protesters during his presidency, another for allegedly
conspiring with foreign powers including Iran to destabilise Egypt, and a
third over a jailbreak during the 2011 uprising that ousted strongman
Hosni Mubarak.
Morsi could face the death penalty if convicted.

many parts of the country the small minority of Christians live at
peace with the Hindu majority. But in some states they are acutely
vulnerable to a militant Hindu nationalist movement called Hindutva,
which is striving to make India a religiously "pure" nation. Recent
years have seen numerous incidents of small-scale aggression such as
those listed above, and also major outbreaks of anti-Christian communal
violence in Orissa and Karnataka. It is difficult for Christians to
obtain justice for offences committed against them. Local police can be
slow to respond to attacks, and often no-one is prosecuted. Corruption
is also rife in the courts, and Christians' unwillingness to play the
system dishonestly works against them. Five years on from the Orissa
violence, few people have been convicted. Christian leaders and human
rights activists continue to campaign for justice, however, and in
December 2012 twelve people were handed prison sentences for their part

Avanessian was taken to a specialized clinic for his routine dialysis,
dressed in prison uniform and accompanied by several guards. He was then
transferred back to the Evin detention center. Rev. Vruir Avanessian,
an Armenian Iranian pastor, was taken to a local hospital from his cell
at Evin detention center to receive much needed kidney dialysis
treatment and then was transferred back to the prison. The 60 year old
pastor was taken to Shahid Hashemi-Nejad hospital's dialysis wing
located in the Vanak area of Tehran, accompanied by several prison
guards. The local weather was extremely cold and he was escorted wearing
only a thin prison uniform, without any proper outer clothing. He was
subsequently returned to the prison after the completion of the much
needed medical procedure. He was allowed a brief visit with his wife,
Rima Avanessian, at the hospital.
Eye-witnesses reported that the
Christian pastor, who has served the Christian community for more than
17 years and is in critical health, was taken to the hospital to receive
treatment, wearing a uniform that is used only for convicted/formally
charged criminals.
This occurred while the presiding chairman of
the Social Committee of the Islamic Republic of Iran's parliament
declared in a recent report that Iranian prisons are like hotels and
contrary to other countries, the Islamic Republic treats even the
convicted criminals with dignity and respect! Rev. Avanessian was being
treated as a convict, although he has not been charged with any crimes
and has not even been informed of the reasons for his arrest. Also, he
was transported to the hospital in a prison uniform that reserved for
convicted criminals. Sources indicate that the health of this 60 year
old pastor is fragile and the ongoing detention, given the current
condition of detention centers and prisons in Iran, could pose a grave
danger to the frail Christian leader. Rev. Avanessian is currently
suffering from heart disease and several operations that resulted in his
premature retirement from ministry. Also, due to his diabetes and
kidney dysfunction, he requires regular dialysis on Tuesdays, Thursdays,
and Saturdays each week at the dialysis clinic of Hashemi-Nejad
Hospital. It must be remembered that Rev. Vruir Avanessian along with 50
other newly converted Christians, who had gathered at a residence in
the Northern suburbs of Tehran to celebrate and worship God on the
arrival of the festive season of Christmas, were interrupted by security
officers and detained for several hours. He, unlike others, was taken
to an unknown location for further interrogation and detention. After
the arrest of this Christian musician, and his transfer to an unknown
location, on Friday, December 28, Pastor Avanessian was given permission
to contact his family by phone for one minute to inform them of his
health and well-being. He was apparently unable to give much explanation
about the state of his health or his location. On Saturday, December
29, one of the prison staff contacted home of Pastor Avanessian and
asked his wife to bring his medication to the prison. While delivering
the necessary medications to the prison authorities, Mrs. Rima
Avanessian warned them that prison and security authorities would be
responsible for any mishaps that could endanger the health and life of

proselytizing, Egypt's state news agency MENA said.
Quoting church
sources, MENA said Libyan authorities had dropped the charges against
them. A fifth detained Egyptian died in a Tripoli prison last month, it
added. The release comes after Egypt extradited two members of the
regime of ousted Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi earlier this month. An
Egyptian court barred the extradition of a cousin of Gaddafi claiming to
hold Egyptian citizenship. Last month, Egyptian judicial sources told
Reuters Egypt was seeking to swap the Libyans with the Egyptian Copts.
On Wednesday, Libya decided to grant Egypt, struggling with economic and
political turmoil, a $2 billion five-year interest-free loan. Libya's
small Christian community has expressed fears over Islamist extremism as
the government struggles to impose its authority over armed groups
which have refused to lay down their weapons since the 2011 war that
ousted Gaddafi. In December, an explosion at a building belonging to a
Coptic church in Dafniya, close to the western Libyan city of Misrata,
killed two Egyptian men and wounded two others.

Though it's the birthplace of Christianity in ancient times, the modern
Middle East is increasingly hostile to Christianity as civil conflict,
Islamic fundamentalism and terrorism grow in scope and strength.
A
few months ago, during the U.N.'s annual debate, the Vatican's
Secretary of State Archbishop Dominique Mamberti told assembled
delegates that Christians currently suffer more persecution because of
their faith and any other religious group. He warned that this "denial
of religious freedom threatened peace and security and precluded human
development." Archbishop Mamberti stressed, "Respect for religious
freedom is the fundamental path for the construction of peace, the
recognition of human dignity and the safeguarding of human rights."
Though the forum of the United Nations regularly echoes calls for global
rights, freedoms, and religious tolerance, rarely are any states
singled out as persecutors of Christianity ― especially in the Middle
East. Iraq offers a bittersweet example. The country's Christian
community dates to the 2nd century A.D. with communities in the Chaldean
and Assyrian churches comprising about 15 percent of the prewar
population, a presence numbered approximately 500,000.
Though
Saddam's regime did not persecute Christians for their religion per se,
many believers nonetheless fled due to political intolerance. Following
the 2003 Anglo/American invasion toppling Saddam, the genie of sectarian
strife was out of the bottle.
"Iraq's Christian community has
dwindled since the U.S.-led invasion. Though no reliable statistics
exist, most experts believe that less than 300,000 Christians remain in
Iraq. Hundreds of thousands have sought refuge in Jordan and Syria," the
Catholic Near East Welfare Association (CNEWA) said. Sixty-six percent
belong to the Chaldean Catholic church. Interestingly one out of five
Iraqis was a Christian in 1932; today the number has dwindled to 1 in
33. Christians are targeted by Islamic factions and as recently as 2010,
some 52 people were killed during the siege of a Catholic church in
Baghdad. Estimates say as much as half or more of Iraqi Christians have
left the country or are internally displaced.
According to the New
York-based Catholic Near East, many displaced Iraqi Christians have
found religious refuge in the Kurdish-controlled north of the country.
The Kurds remain committed to protecting religious minorities and thus
Christians have found safe haven.
But the winds of the Arab Spring
have not been kind to Christians in Egypt, where the country's large
Coptic community has come under assault. Though approximately 10 percent
of the population largely protected during the secular government of
deposed President Hosni Mubarak, the communities have come under assault
over the past year. Domestic political chaos, growing Islamic
fundamentalism, and simmering discrimination has targeted this
vulnerable community. Equally in Syria, a 5-percent strong Christian
community, remains divided between Greek Orthodox and Catholics. Despite
the secular Assad family dictatorship, the minority has not been
specifically targeted but many Christians have emigrated. Still Syria
has hosted fleeing Iraqi Christians who number 150,000 according to
CNEWA. On the positive side, tiny Lebanon hosts a Christian community
numbering over a million and comprising over a third of the population.
Partly reflecting the legacy of French rule, a strong Maronite church
among others shares political power with Muslim factions to this day.
Sadly the Lebanese civil war in the 1970s was rooted in sectarian
strife. Today's Lebanon, again regaining prosperity, remains a place of
tolerance.
So too does the Kingdom of Jordan where the Christian
population has dropped from 5 percent to the current 3 percent.
Significantly in the Royal Parliament, nine of the 110 seats are
specifically reserved for Christians and relations are generally
positive. Israel allows its small Arab Christian community to practice
their religion freely.
Sadly in the lands of the ancient Christian
denominations, highly politicized Islam remains a challenge to the
churches. Given the fragile or fragmented role of secular Arab states,
Christian minorities are among the first to be demonized and often
targeted. The world watches and does little about this blatant religious
intolerance.

Shanghai. Several Christians received labor camp sentences.

An
influential house church Christian in Shanghai who has been targeted
for repeated government harassment was given an extra-judicial sentence
to a labor camp just days before the 18th Communist Party Congress
opened, just one example of the ruling Communist Party's harsh measures
to maintain order in advance of this major conclave where the reins of
power will be handed over.
Labor camp sentences were also meted
out for several other people who had joined Mao Hengfeng in seeking
redress by petitioning the government, and a large number of petitioners
have disappeared into official custody, have been criminally detained
or have had their freedom of movement curtailed in the run-up to the
Nov. 8 opening of the 18th Party Congress.
Mao was sentenced on
Oct. 30 to 18 months of "re-education through labor" for "disrupting
public order." (see scans below) This is the third labor camp sentence
for Mao, who will be 51 next month and is in poor health with
dangerously high blood pressure.
Her case is but one example of
the clampdown on personal freedoms, especially for petitioners, in
advance of the Party Congress. Famed Shanghai activist Feng Zhenghu has
been illegally confined to his home for eight months already.
Mao
is an influential presence among the tens of thousands of Shanghai
petitioners. Not only has she long been trying to use the law to seek
redress from various government departments for her own case and to
protect her legal rights, she's also worked on behalf of other
petitioners. That Shanghai's petitioners are more united, more
knowledgeable about the law and government policy and more rational in
using the law to protect their rights than petitioners elsewhere is
largely due to the efforts of Mao, Shen Peilan, Jin Yuehua and other
leading figures. It is precisely for this reason that Mao has been the
focus of attention of the municipal, district and grassroots governments
and why they have been ceaselessly targeting her for attacks.
As
early as July 2003, Mao was put under judicial detention for 15 days for
"disrupting court order." In April 2004, she was sentenced to 18 months
of "re-education through labor" for "disrupting public order." In
January 2007, she was sentenced to a two-year jail term for
"deliberately damaging property." In January 2009, she was placed under
administrative detention for seven days for "disturbing order in a
public place." In March 2010, she was sentenced to a second 18-month
term of re-education through labor for "disrupting public order" but was
released early due to stage 3 hypertension.
Her most recent
sentence stems from a Jan. 5 gathering during which she and others
marked the anniversary of the deaths of the mother of one of the
petitioners and a similar gathering on July 1 to mark the anniversary of
the 2007 death of Chen Xiaoming, a human rights lawyer who was a
leading housing rights activist after he lost his own home.
ChinaAid
has learned that several other petitioners who have also received labor
camp sentences. Christian women Shen Peilan and Jin Yuehua were
detained by police in recent days and a large number of petitioners have
been forcibly detained on Chongming Island to attend "vacation
classes."
ChinaAid founder and president Bob Fu expressed grave
concern for the plight of the "disappeared" and detained petitioners and
for others who have suffered human rights abuses perpetrated by the
Chinese government as it sought to "maintain stability" in preparation
for the 18th Party Congress. He noted that these measures run counter to
the concept of a "harmonious society" that outgoing leaders Hu Jintao
and Wen Jiabao have long been advocating. Fu called on the international
community to pay close attention to the developments in these cases and
on the Chinese government to grasp the opportunity presented by the
18th Party Congress to bring about real reforms that will protect human
rights, the rule of law and basic rights such as freedom of religion.
