Survey to show 'increase in direct attacks' on religious freedom worldwide amid COVID-19 pandemic

A forthcoming survey is slated to reveal how adverse treatment of certain religious groups in several countries significantly worsened during the coronavirus pandemic.
The SMART survey, conducted as part of the Religious Freedom Institute’s Freedom of Religious Institutions in Society (FORIS) Project, was designed to fulfill an “unmet need for policy-relevant data to identify, understand and address religious freedom restrictions on religious communities across the globe.” A detailed report analyzing the survey's results will be published soon.
Rebecca Shah, a senior fellow at the Archbridge Institute and principal investigator for the Religion and Economic Empowerment Project (REEP), elaborated on the results of the SMART survey during an RFI panel discussion on Wednesday.
“The SMART survey stands for Simple, Meaningful, Accessible, Relevant and Timely,” she said.
While the survey initially received funding to question experts on the ground about the state of religious freedom in Malaysia, Pakistan, Indonesia and Iraq, the survey was later expanded to other countries, about 10 countries, including India, Egypt, Mexico, Turkey and Greece.
According to Shah, “policymakers … needed reliable reports that drew on the deep expertise of individuals who could analyze religious freedom violations on the ground in key global locations and provide policymakers with real-time and reliable data on strategic countries.”
While “a lot of reports on religious freedom restrictions, both individuals and religious institutions,” existed prior to the SMART survey, Shah stressed the need for “information that comes from local experts on the ground in their own countries, rather than, say, somebody’s desk in Washington, D.C., or Geneva.”
She contended that the findings of such a survey were “more likely to be owned by actors in the country and in the region.” The “local experts in these different countries” who participated “were asked to fill out the survey from the perspective of a minority religious community or a majority religious community” based on expertise or membership in a particular religion.
“We started the survey before the pandemic, but as soon as the pandemic hit, we were able to retool the questionnaire to some extent, a great extent, and resubmit the questions to the experts and ask them to fill out COVID-related questions.
And so, a lot of the data we got was over the COVID-19 period … at the height of the Delta variant and others, where we were able to examine and explore the impact of restrictions on religious communities as the pandemic was ongoing,” Shah said.
Shah reported that the survey found “an increase in deliberate and direct attacks on houses of worship … and religious and charitable and other religious institutions across the globe.” Specifically, “In Nigeria … 85.7% of respondents writing about minority Christian communities in northern parts of Nigeria said they were aware of direct attacks of houses of worship in their country.”
“In Iraq, 30% of respondents reporting about minority communities, which included Yazidis and Christians, said they were aware of attacks on houses of worship in their countries.”
“Again, when asked who, in their view, were the perpetrators of these attacks, our data revealed that political actors, which might include local government officials, were responsible for 60% of high or very high levels of restrictions on religious institutions, which include houses of worship … religious and charitable institutions,” she added.
The survey also asked respondents if they knew of “any acts of discrimination perpetrated against individuals or communities on account of their religion or belief that may have been prompted by the current COVID-19 pandemic.” The results revealed that “one out of three respondents from India said they were aware of such types of religiously motivated discrimination during COVID.”
Additionally, “one out of five respondents in Indonesia said the same and 10% of Nigerian respondents also said they were aware of this type of … discrimination.”
Shah discussed “significant restrictions on both minority and majority institutions in India,” emphasizing that “the impact of these restrictions have come to the fore during this COVID-19 pandemic.” She explained that “state-sanctioned restrictions on Hindu institutions” during the coronavirus pandemic severely “limited the ways in which they could actually provide services to their adherents.”
“The current pandemic enabled many governments to pass stringent regulations that severely restricted the freedom of individuals and institutions they deemed ‘a threat to national security,’” Shah lamented.
“More than four out of every 10 respondents in our survey said they were aware of peaceful prisoners of conscience who were being held and not released due to concerns about COVID-19.
This happened even as the deadly Delta variant raged across Asia.”
Shah cited Indonesia’s treatment of political prisoners as a cause for concern, sharing the finding that “more than 70% of respondents from Indonesia were concerned about the well-being of political prisoners during COVID-19 in their country.” Respondents also reported “increasing levels of persecution against people who overly criticized the government and their handling of COVID-19.”
“The current COVID-19 pandemic has led to an unprecedented increase in hate speech stigma and discrimination,” Shah asserted.
“Ninety-nine percent of respondents in Egypt, 78% of respondents in Pakistan, and 70% of respondents in Indonesia, 64% of respondents in Nepal said there were laws on blasphemy and apostasy that were open to abuse.”
Discrimination also ran rampant in India, with 68% of respondents from the country alleging that “the religious communities suffered because there was a failure to address acts of religious persecution or discrimination on the part of non-state actors, state actors or levels of government.” In Israel, Orthodox Jews faced “heavy levels of discrimination” because of their opposition to the coronavirus vaccine.
Shah concluded the discussion about the SMART survey by noting that Nigeria, Egypt, Indonesia and Iraq reported very high levels of communal beatings and lynchings on the basis of religion or belief.
At the same time, very high levels of communal or group expulsions based on religion or belief were India, Nigeria, Egypt and Sri Lanka.
India, Indonesia, Nigeria, Malaysia and Egypt reported very high levels of communal killings.

Ad animare il tam tam della comunicazione è il caso di Arianna Pezzotti, madre di due ragazze universitarie, nata a Trastevere e cresciuta a Tor Sapienza.
La donna perde il lavoro e le viene tolto il tesserino da steward per una misura preventiva legata alla sua militanza in un’associazione vicino alla destra romana e perché in passato avrebbe partecipato ad alcune iniziative di solidarietà per Forza Nuova.

A chiarire la sua posizione è pure l’associazione culturale Area Rieti in cui la Pezzotti milita.
“In quasi 30 anni di attività – dice a ilGiornale.it il dirigente Chicco Costini - non abbiamo mai subito un’indagine per reati legati al razzismo.
Nessun militante è stato mai denunciato per reati ascrivibili al decreto Mancino.
Non abbiamo mai nascosto le nostre idee e le abbiamo manifestate con radicalità, assumendocene sempre piena responsabilità, a viso aperto, ma questo non ha mai travalicato le leggi in vigore.
Solo nei regimi totalitari si colpiscono le persone per le proprie idee.
Negare il diritto al lavoro a una madre di famiglia per le sue idee politiche, la sua attività sociale, senza accusarla di un solo atto concreto, ma criminalizzando il suo impegno civile perché non conforme al pensiero dominante, è un atto gravissimo, da regime dittatoriale, inaccettabile in una nazione che almeno a parole dovrebbe essere ancora una democrazia, nella quale il libero pensiero è difeso dalla costituzione, prima ancora che dalle leggi”.
Il provvedimento fa irritare anche l’associazione Nessuno Tocchi Caino, che pur non essendo di destra, tramite il dirigente nazionale Umberto Baccolo, fa sapere: “Una delle nostre maggiori battaglie è contro le misure interdittive che si usano preventivamente nell'antimafia, ma qui la situazione è ancora più grave e paradossale, perché non solo Arianna è incensurata e mai indagata, ma non si parla neppure di criminalità organizzata, caso unico in Italia.
Non la si vuol far lavorare solo perché ha frequentato tempo fa Forza Nuova per portare aiuti ai terremotati ad Amatrice e perché milita in un'associazione di destra legale, diretta da un medico di famiglia che addirittura esercita nelle carceri”.
La battaglia viene sposata dal mondo socialista e in modo particolare dall’ex capogruppo del Pdl Fabrizio Cicchitto per cui è “agghiacciante che avere la tessera di un’associazione diventi ostativo rispetto al lavoro per il quale si è seguito anche un corso di formazione, tra l’altro una madre che deve mantenere i propri figli”.
Sulla stessa linea d’onda i liberali Enzo Palumbo e Marco Moltecchi: “Uno stato democratico non può mettere la mordacchia alla libertà di pensiero e alle sue manifestazioni.
La Questura di Roma su suggerimento della digos di Rieti dovrebbe rivedere il provvedimento emesso”.
Non utilizza giri di parole neanche Vittorio Sgarbi, che sostiene come il caso Pezzotti sia "un arbitrio, un atto di prepotenza che contrasta con i diritti dei lavoratori, per cui l'interdittiva che non le permette di lavorare dovrà essere rispedita al mittente, non avendo nessuna logica e nessun fondamento".
Il senatore di Fratelli d’Italia Claudio Barbaro sarebbe pronto addirittura a portare il caso in Parlamento.
“Appresa la questione dal dirigente dell’Associazione Culturale Area Rieti Felice Costini, che ha spiegato la vicenda, la riteniamo importante e stiamo già valutando nei prossimi giorni di fare un atto parlamentare”.
Chi utilizza i social per manifestare il proprio sdegno, invece, è Gianni Alemanno: "Mi auguro vivamente che tutto questo sia fonte di un equivoco che il Questore di Roma vorrà rapidamente risolvere, ritirando il provvedimento in questione.
Altrimenti a occuparsi della cosa dovranno essere il Parlamento e le aule di giustizia, dove Area e Arianna si presenteranno non come imputati ma come parte lesa per calunnia e per violazione dei diritti costituzionali".
Per il coordinatore romano della Lega Alfredo Becchetti "a prescindere da qualunque sia la partecipazione di Arianna Pezzotti ad attività politiche, quello di chi ha emesso il provvedimento è un comportamento addirittura incostituzionale".
Per l'ex ministro Mario Landolfi “discriminare sulla base di idee politiche è mostruoso.
Spero ci siano i margini per rivalutare una decisione inconcepibile.
È indegno in uno Stato democratico”.
Secondo Amedeo Laboccetta, ex parlamentare ed esponente di spicco della destra napoletana "neanche nella Russia comunista accadevano queste cose.
Negare il lavoro a una persona madre di due figli per l'appartenenza a un'associazione, che non ha mai avuto una denuncia, che non ha mai partecipato a manifestazioni violente e non ha neanche un'indagine è un fatto gravissimo".
Quella che può sembrare una battaglia di destra, però, trova la sensibilità anche da parte di autorevoli esponenti di altre forze politiche, come nel caso di Paolo Ferrero, vice presidente del Partito della Sinistra Europea.
“Non conosco la vicenda, ma se una persona viene discriminata sulla base di idee politiche e privata del lavoro è un qualcosa di sbagliato.
La nostra Costituzione antifascista serve a evitare ogni discriminazione”.
Ferdinando Mach di Palmenstein, ex segretario del partito socialista, chiede addirittura l'intervento del capo della Polizia: "Lamberto Giannini deve assolutamente prendere in esame la situazione di Arianna Pezzotti".
Per Giuseppe Rossodivita, Partito Radicale, “è un racconto da stato di polizia, che non fa onore alla nostra Costituzione che riconosce, in assenza di qualsiasi reato o comportamento illecito, il diritto di manifestare le proprie opinioni.
Penso che tale situazione meriti di essere sottoposta ai percorsi che l'ordinamento prevede per verificarne la legittimità".
Il senatore dell'Udc Antonio Saccone, a prescindere dalle idee che non condivide, afferma come "non si può avere nessuna forma di rappresaglia, nè negare il diritto al lavoro.
Stiamo parlando di un qualcosa che è salvaguardato dalla Costituzione, soprattutto se si tratta di una madre con dei figli”.
Biagio Marzo, politico e giornalista, poi, sostiene che se "si criminalizza un'innocente perché milita in un'organizzazione di destra, figurarsi quanti cittadini dovrebbero essere criminalizzati perché militano in quelle di sinistra o di centro.
Il caso Arianna Pezzotti mi sembra un'operazione giudiziaria che ricorda l'Ovra".
L'ecologista Sergio Pizzolante mette in risalto come sia “sbagliato togliere il tesserino a una donna solo perché ha partecipato a un’iniziativa politica.
Vale sia per la destra, che per la sinistra”.
Il deputato e presidente di +Europa Riccardo Magi, pertanto, ritiene come "non ci siano i presupposti per escludere Arianna Pezzotti dal lavoro di steward".
Non si esclude che nelle prossime ore potrebbero esserci adesioni trasversali a un'iniziativa che, dopo mesi, starebbe mettendo insieme l'intero universo garantista, senza alcun eccezione di colore o di simbolo, considerando il passaparola dei social e gli scambi di battute tra chi, senza badare troppo ai partiti, non condivide quanto accaduto.

Survey to show 'increase in direct attacks' on religious freedom worldwide amid COVID-19 pandemic

A forthcoming survey is slated to reveal how adverse treatment of certain religious groups in several countries significantly worsened during the coronavirus pandemic.
The SMART survey, conducted as part of the Religious Freedom Institute’s Freedom of Religious Institutions in Society (FORIS) Project, was designed to fulfill an “unmet need for policy-relevant data to identify, understand and address religious freedom restrictions on religious communities across the globe.” A detailed report analyzing the survey's results will be published soon.
Rebecca Shah, a senior fellow at the Archbridge Institute and principal investigator for the Religion and Economic Empowerment Project (REEP), elaborated on the results of the SMART survey during an RFI panel discussion on Wednesday.
“The SMART survey stands for Simple, Meaningful, Accessible, Relevant and Timely,” she said.
While the survey initially received funding to question experts on the ground about the state of religious freedom in Malaysia, Pakistan, Indonesia and Iraq, the survey was later expanded to other countries, about 10 countries, including India, Egypt, Mexico, Turkey and Greece.
According to Shah, “policymakers … needed reliable reports that drew on the deep expertise of individuals who could analyze religious freedom violations on the ground in key global locations and provide policymakers with real-time and reliable data on strategic countries.”
While “a lot of reports on religious freedom restrictions, both individuals and religious institutions,” existed prior to the SMART survey, Shah stressed the need for “information that comes from local experts on the ground in their own countries, rather than, say, somebody’s desk in Washington, D.C., or Geneva.”
She contended that the findings of such a survey were “more likely to be owned by actors in the country and in the region.” The “local experts in these different countries” who participated “were asked to fill out the survey from the perspective of a minority religious community or a majority religious community” based on expertise or membership in a particular religion.
“We started the survey before the pandemic, but as soon as the pandemic hit, we were able to retool the questionnaire to some extent, a great extent, and resubmit the questions to the experts and ask them to fill out COVID-related questions.
And so, a lot of the data we got was over the COVID-19 period … at the height of the Delta variant and others, where we were able to examine and explore the impact of restrictions on religious communities as the pandemic was ongoing,” Shah said.
Shah reported that the survey found “an increase in deliberate and direct attacks on houses of worship … and religious and charitable and other religious institutions across the globe.” Specifically, “In Nigeria … 85.7% of respondents writing about minority Christian communities in northern parts of Nigeria said they were aware of direct attacks of houses of worship in their country.”
“In Iraq, 30% of respondents reporting about minority communities, which included Yazidis and Christians, said they were aware of attacks on houses of worship in their countries.”
“Again, when asked who, in their view, were the perpetrators of these attacks, our data revealed that political actors, which might include local government officials, were responsible for 60% of high or very high levels of restrictions on religious institutions, which include houses of worship … religious and charitable institutions,” she added.
The survey also asked respondents if they knew of “any acts of discrimination perpetrated against individuals or communities on account of their religion or belief that may have been prompted by the current COVID-19 pandemic.” The results revealed that “one out of three respondents from India said they were aware of such types of religiously motivated discrimination during COVID.”
Additionally, “one out of five respondents in Indonesia said the same and 10% of Nigerian respondents also said they were aware of this type of … discrimination.”
Shah discussed “significant restrictions on both minority and majority institutions in India,” emphasizing that “the impact of these restrictions have come to the fore during this COVID-19 pandemic.” She explained that “state-sanctioned restrictions on Hindu institutions” during the coronavirus pandemic severely “limited the ways in which they could actually provide services to their adherents.”
“The current pandemic enabled many governments to pass stringent regulations that severely restricted the freedom of individuals and institutions they deemed ‘a threat to national security,’” Shah lamented.
“More than four out of every 10 respondents in our survey said they were aware of peaceful prisoners of conscience who were being held and not released due to concerns about COVID-19.
This happened even as the deadly Delta variant raged across Asia.”
Shah cited Indonesia’s treatment of political prisoners as a cause for concern, sharing the finding that “more than 70% of respondents from Indonesia were concerned about the well-being of political prisoners during COVID-19 in their country.” Respondents also reported “increasing levels of persecution against people who overly criticized the government and their handling of COVID-19.”
“The current COVID-19 pandemic has led to an unprecedented increase in hate speech stigma and discrimination,” Shah asserted.
“Ninety-nine percent of respondents in Egypt, 78% of respondents in Pakistan, and 70% of respondents in Indonesia, 64% of respondents in Nepal said there were laws on blasphemy and apostasy that were open to abuse.”
Discrimination also ran rampant in India, with 68% of respondents from the country alleging that “the religious communities suffered because there was a failure to address acts of religious persecution or discrimination on the part of non-state actors, state actors or levels of government.” In Israel, Orthodox Jews faced “heavy levels of discrimination” because of their opposition to the coronavirus vaccine.
Shah concluded the discussion about the SMART survey by noting that Nigeria, Egypt, Indonesia and Iraq reported very high levels of communal beatings and lynchings on the basis of religion or belief.
At the same time, very high levels of communal or group expulsions based on religion or belief were India, Nigeria, Egypt and Sri Lanka.
India, Indonesia, Nigeria, Malaysia and Egypt reported very high levels of communal killings.

Ad animare il tam tam della comunicazione è il caso di Arianna Pezzotti, madre di due ragazze universitarie, nata a Trastevere e cresciuta a Tor Sapienza.
La donna perde il lavoro e le viene tolto il tesserino da steward per una misura preventiva legata alla sua militanza in un’associazione vicino alla destra romana e perché in passato avrebbe partecipato ad alcune iniziative di solidarietà per Forza Nuova.

A chiarire la sua posizione è pure l’associazione culturale Area Rieti in cui la Pezzotti milita.
“In quasi 30 anni di attività – dice a ilGiornale.it il dirigente Chicco Costini - non abbiamo mai subito un’indagine per reati legati al razzismo.
Nessun militante è stato mai denunciato per reati ascrivibili al decreto Mancino.
Non abbiamo mai nascosto le nostre idee e le abbiamo manifestate con radicalità, assumendocene sempre piena responsabilità, a viso aperto, ma questo non ha mai travalicato le leggi in vigore.
Solo nei regimi totalitari si colpiscono le persone per le proprie idee.
Negare il diritto al lavoro a una madre di famiglia per le sue idee politiche, la sua attività sociale, senza accusarla di un solo atto concreto, ma criminalizzando il suo impegno civile perché non conforme al pensiero dominante, è un atto gravissimo, da regime dittatoriale, inaccettabile in una nazione che almeno a parole dovrebbe essere ancora una democrazia, nella quale il libero pensiero è difeso dalla costituzione, prima ancora che dalle leggi”.
Il provvedimento fa irritare anche l’associazione Nessuno Tocchi Caino, che pur non essendo di destra, tramite il dirigente nazionale Umberto Baccolo, fa sapere: “Una delle nostre maggiori battaglie è contro le misure interdittive che si usano preventivamente nell'antimafia, ma qui la situazione è ancora più grave e paradossale, perché non solo Arianna è incensurata e mai indagata, ma non si parla neppure di criminalità organizzata, caso unico in Italia.
Non la si vuol far lavorare solo perché ha frequentato tempo fa Forza Nuova per portare aiuti ai terremotati ad Amatrice e perché milita in un'associazione di destra legale, diretta da un medico di famiglia che addirittura esercita nelle carceri”.
La battaglia viene sposata dal mondo socialista e in modo particolare dall’ex capogruppo del Pdl Fabrizio Cicchitto per cui è “agghiacciante che avere la tessera di un’associazione diventi ostativo rispetto al lavoro per il quale si è seguito anche un corso di formazione, tra l’altro una madre che deve mantenere i propri figli”.
Sulla stessa linea d’onda i liberali Enzo Palumbo e Marco Moltecchi: “Uno stato democratico non può mettere la mordacchia alla libertà di pensiero e alle sue manifestazioni.
La Questura di Roma su suggerimento della digos di Rieti dovrebbe rivedere il provvedimento emesso”.
Non utilizza giri di parole neanche Vittorio Sgarbi, che sostiene come il caso Pezzotti sia "un arbitrio, un atto di prepotenza che contrasta con i diritti dei lavoratori, per cui l'interdittiva che non le permette di lavorare dovrà essere rispedita al mittente, non avendo nessuna logica e nessun fondamento".
Il senatore di Fratelli d’Italia Claudio Barbaro sarebbe pronto addirittura a portare il caso in Parlamento.
“Appresa la questione dal dirigente dell’Associazione Culturale Area Rieti Felice Costini, che ha spiegato la vicenda, la riteniamo importante e stiamo già valutando nei prossimi giorni di fare un atto parlamentare”.
Chi utilizza i social per manifestare il proprio sdegno, invece, è Gianni Alemanno: "Mi auguro vivamente che tutto questo sia fonte di un equivoco che il Questore di Roma vorrà rapidamente risolvere, ritirando il provvedimento in questione.
Altrimenti a occuparsi della cosa dovranno essere il Parlamento e le aule di giustizia, dove Area e Arianna si presenteranno non come imputati ma come parte lesa per calunnia e per violazione dei diritti costituzionali".
Per il coordinatore romano della Lega Alfredo Becchetti "a prescindere da qualunque sia la partecipazione di Arianna Pezzotti ad attività politiche, quello di chi ha emesso il provvedimento è un comportamento addirittura incostituzionale".
Per l'ex ministro Mario Landolfi “discriminare sulla base di idee politiche è mostruoso.
Spero ci siano i margini per rivalutare una decisione inconcepibile.
È indegno in uno Stato democratico”.
Secondo Amedeo Laboccetta, ex parlamentare ed esponente di spicco della destra napoletana "neanche nella Russia comunista accadevano queste cose.
Negare il lavoro a una persona madre di due figli per l'appartenenza a un'associazione, che non ha mai avuto una denuncia, che non ha mai partecipato a manifestazioni violente e non ha neanche un'indagine è un fatto gravissimo".
Quella che può sembrare una battaglia di destra, però, trova la sensibilità anche da parte di autorevoli esponenti di altre forze politiche, come nel caso di Paolo Ferrero, vice presidente del Partito della Sinistra Europea.
“Non conosco la vicenda, ma se una persona viene discriminata sulla base di idee politiche e privata del lavoro è un qualcosa di sbagliato.
La nostra Costituzione antifascista serve a evitare ogni discriminazione”.
Ferdinando Mach di Palmenstein, ex segretario del partito socialista, chiede addirittura l'intervento del capo della Polizia: "Lamberto Giannini deve assolutamente prendere in esame la situazione di Arianna Pezzotti".
Per Giuseppe Rossodivita, Partito Radicale, “è un racconto da stato di polizia, che non fa onore alla nostra Costituzione che riconosce, in assenza di qualsiasi reato o comportamento illecito, il diritto di manifestare le proprie opinioni.
Penso che tale situazione meriti di essere sottoposta ai percorsi che l'ordinamento prevede per verificarne la legittimità".
Il senatore dell'Udc Antonio Saccone, a prescindere dalle idee che non condivide, afferma come "non si può avere nessuna forma di rappresaglia, nè negare il diritto al lavoro.
Stiamo parlando di un qualcosa che è salvaguardato dalla Costituzione, soprattutto se si tratta di una madre con dei figli”.
Biagio Marzo, politico e giornalista, poi, sostiene che se "si criminalizza un'innocente perché milita in un'organizzazione di destra, figurarsi quanti cittadini dovrebbero essere criminalizzati perché militano in quelle di sinistra o di centro.
Il caso Arianna Pezzotti mi sembra un'operazione giudiziaria che ricorda l'Ovra".
L'ecologista Sergio Pizzolante mette in risalto come sia “sbagliato togliere il tesserino a una donna solo perché ha partecipato a un’iniziativa politica.
Vale sia per la destra, che per la sinistra”.
Il deputato e presidente di +Europa Riccardo Magi, pertanto, ritiene come "non ci siano i presupposti per escludere Arianna Pezzotti dal lavoro di steward".
Non si esclude che nelle prossime ore potrebbero esserci adesioni trasversali a un'iniziativa che, dopo mesi, starebbe mettendo insieme l'intero universo garantista, senza alcun eccezione di colore o di simbolo, considerando il passaparola dei social e gli scambi di battute tra chi, senza badare troppo ai partiti, non condivide quanto accaduto.

Two scholars shared conflicting views during a Wednesday panel discussion hosted by the Religious Freedom Institute about a proposed compromise bill that would codify a ban on LGBT discrimination into federal law while protecting the religious freedom of faith-based organizations and individuals.

The world's leading cause of death? Abortion
For the third year in a row, abortions have been the leading cause of death worldwide, with more than three times as many people losing their lives to abortion than the second leading cause of death.
Worldometer, a database that keeps track of statistics on health, the global population and other metrics in real-time, determines the number of abortions performed worldwide based on data obtained from the World Health Organization.
The last available snapshot of the tracker, which was captured by the Wayback Machine as it appeared on New Year's Eve, revealed that around 42.6 million abortions were performed globally in 2021.
