Saint
Antoine est né au Portugal, à Lisbonne,
en 1195. Une tradition baroque indique la date du 15
août. Il était le fils de nobles, Martino
de' Buglioni et donna Maria Taveira. Leur maison était
distante de quelques mètres de la cathédrale.
Il fut baptisé sous le nom de Fernand.
Pendant
ses premières années de formation, il
fut guidé culturellement par les chanoines du Dôme.
Parmi ses compagnons d'études se trouvaient également
des garçons déjà orientés vers
le choix du sacerdoce. C'est très probablement de là
que naquit l'aspiration du jeune Fernand à choisir
le service sacerdotal.
Mais
ce furent surtout la médiocrité morale, la superficialité
et la corruption de la société qui le poussèrent
à entrer au monastère augustinien de São
Vicente, hors des murs de Lisbonne, pour vivre l'idéal
évangélique sans compromis.
Parmi les Augustiniens  Fernand
demeura à São Vicente pendant deux ans environ.
Puis, agacé par les visites continuelles de ses amis,
avec lesquels il n'avait plus rien à partager, il
demanda à se transférer ailleurs, toujours
au sein de l'Ordre augustinien. Antoine affrontait ainsi son
premier grand voyage, 230 kilomètres environ qui séparent
Lisbonne de Coimbre, à l'époque capitale
du Portugal.
Fernand
avait 17 ans. Il vécut avec une grande communauté
d'environ 70 membres pendant 8 ans, de 1212 à 1220.
Ce
furent des années très importantes pour la
formation humaine et intellectuelle du Saint, lequel pouvait
compter sur des maîtres de talent et sur une bibliothèque
riche et à jour.
Fernand
se dédia totalement à l'étude des
sciences humaines et théologiques, pour s'isoler
entre autres des tensions existant dans la communauté
religieuse. Les années passées à Santa
Cruz de Coimbre laissèrent des traces profondes
dans la physionomie psychologique et dans le développement
existentiel du futur apôtre.
De
par son caractère, il nous apparaît déjà
comme un homme isolé, jaloux de son secret,
comme enfermé dans ses occupations qui le laissaient
à peine respirer. Il devint de son plein gré
un homme privé d'ambitions sociales ; contraire
à toute ostentation et exhibition de soi et de
ses qualités ; méfiant des polémiques
; indifférent à l'extériorité
sous toutes ses formes, à moins qu'il ne soit poussé
par le devoir du témoignage évangélique.
Il
sortit de Coimbre en homme mûr. Sa culture théologique,
nourrie par la Bible et la tradition patristique, avait
atteint un stade définitif.
Ferdinand prêtre
A Sainte-Croix,
Fernand fut ordonné prêtre, probablement en 1220.
Pour le jeune Fernand, la norme ecclésiastique qui
fixait à un minimum de 30 ans l'âge pour avoir
accès au sacerdoce, ne fut pas observée.
